Casper Ulrich Mortensen (born December 14, 1989 in Copenhagen ) is a Danish handball player .

Career

In the club

Mortensen started playing handball at the age of six at Frederiksberg IF (FIF for short). When the Dane was 16 years old, he was a member of the men's team at FCK Håndbold . In order to get more play, the winger joined the second division Ajax Heroes for the 2007/08 season . In the summer of 2009 he moved to the first division club Fredericia HK . After Mortensen could not prevent the relegation of Fredericia in the 2010/11 season despite 98 goals, the Danish first division club Viborg HK took him under contract.

Mortensen quickly developed into a top performer in Viborg and, at the end of the regular 2011/12 season, took second place in the scorers list with 144 goals. At the end of the season Mortensen injured his meniscus , which meant he could not participate in the play-offs. He then joined the league rivals Bjerringbro-Silkeborg . In his first season at Bjerringbro-Silkeborg, he played in the EHF Champions League . In September 2014 Mortensen signed a contract with SønderjyskE . In June 2015 Mortensen signed a three-year contract with HSV Hamburg , for which he played in the 2015/16 season until bankruptcy and withdrawal from the Bundesliga. Mortensen then moved to TSV Hannover-Burgdorf in February 2016 . In 2018 he reached the final in the DHB Cup with TSV , which was lost to the Rhein-Neckar-Löwen at 26:30 . With 230 goals he was the top scorer in the handball Bundesliga . He has been under contract with the Spanish club FC Barcelona since the 2018/19 season . With Barcelona he won the Spanish championship in 2019 and 2020 and the Copa del Rey de Balonmano in 2019 .

In the national team

Casper Ulrich Mortensen initially played for the Danish youth and junior national team. From 2010 he was a member of the senior national team . With the Danish selection, he won the silver medal at the 2013 World Cup . At the 2014 European Championships in his own country, he was runner-up in Europe. He won the gold medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . He became world champion at the 2019 World Cup.
