The Cottle County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Paducah . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located northwest of the geographic center of Texas, about 50 km from the federal border with Oklahoma, and covers an area of ​​2,335 square kilometers, of which 1 square kilometer is water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Childress County , Hardeman County , Foard County , King County , Motley County, and Hall Counties .

history

Cottle County was formed from parts of Fannin County on August 21, 1876 , and the administrative organization was completed in January 1892. It was named after George Washington Cottle (1798–1836), a common soldier and defender in the Battle of the Alamo .

One of the county's sites is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of October 23, 2018, the Cottle County Courthouse Historic District .

According to the 2000 census , Cottle County had 1,904 people in 820 households and 550 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 81.46 percent white, 9.87 percent African American, 0.00 percent Native American, 0.00 percent Asian and 7.20 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.47 percent were descended from two or more races. 18.91 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 820 households, 28.0 percent had children or young people living with them. 53.9 percent were married couples living together, 10.6 percent were single mothers and 32.9 percent were non-families. 32.0 percent were single households and 20.9 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.28 and the average family size was 2.84 people.

23.9 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 5.7 percent between 18 and 24, 21.5 percent between 25 and 44, 23.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 25.6 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 87.2 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 81.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $ 25,446 , and the median income for a family was $ 33,036. Males had a median income of $ 24,375 versus $ 16,667 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,212. 13.7 percent of families and 18.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
