The Galveston County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Galveston . League City is the county's largest city.

The county is located southeast of the geographic center of Texas, belongs to the Houston metropolitan area and borders the Gulf of Mexico to the southeast . It has an area of ​​2261 square kilometers, of which 1229 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Harris County , Chambers County, and Brazoria Counties .

history

Galveston County was formed on May 15, 1838 from parts of Brazoria County, Harris County and Liberty County , and the administrative organization was completed in 1839. It was named after Bernardo de Gálvez y Madrid (1746–1786), the 1777 governor of the Spanish part of the Louisiana colony . The city of Galveston was the largest in the republic and also the cultural and commercial center. Bolivar on the Bolivar Peninsula was the second most important port in the region.

Galveston was a major port city during the Texan War of Independence . The 1900 hurricane killed at least 6,000 people in the county. The Port of Galveston was closed because that of Texas City reopened almost immediately. After the port of Galveston was rebuilt, Houston and Texas City became the main port cities.

In 1901 the oil rush began in Galveston County. Refineries were built in Texas City. Traditionally a tourist destination, Galveston became known nationwide. The Maceo Criminal Syndicate then controlled Galveston and engaged in smuggling and gambling. The gambling empire was destroyed in the 1950s. As a result of this action, Galveston crashed economically. Texas City survived because of its vigorous industry.

77 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of May 28, 2019). There are three National Historic Landmarks in the county : the East End Historic District , the Elissa Sailing Ship, and The Strand Historic District .

According to the 2000 census , Galveston County had 250,158 people in 94,782 households and 66,157 families. The population density was 242 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 72.69 percent white, 15.44 percent African American, 0.47 percent Native American, 2.10 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 7.18 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.08 percent were descended from two or more races. 17.96 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 94,782 households, 33.8 percent had children or young people living with them. 52.4 percent were married couples living together, 13.1 percent were single mothers and 30.2 percent were non-families. 25.1 percent were single households and 8.1 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.12 people.

26.7 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.7 percent between 18 and 24, 30.2 percent between 25 and 44, 23.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 11.1 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 95.9 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 93.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $ 42,419 , and the median income for a family is $ 51,435. Males had a median income of $ 41,406 versus $ 28,703 for females. The per capita income was $ 21,568. 10.1 percent of families and 13.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
