The Wood County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is Quitman . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in northeast Texas, about 50 km away from Oklahoma and Arkansas . It has an area of 1802 square kilometers, 118 square kilometers of which are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Hopkins County , Franklin County , Upshur County , Smith County , Van Zandt County, and Rains County .

history

Wood County was formed in 1850 from parts of Van Zandt County. It was named after George Tyler Wood , the 2nd governor of Texas.

The racial the population was composed of 89.11 percent white, 6.12 percent African American, 0.55 percent Native American, 0.20 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 2.91 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.09 percent were descended from two or more races. 5.72 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
