The European Ice Hockey Cup in the 1985/86 season was the 21st edition of the competition of the same name by the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF . The competition began in October 1985; the final was played in August 1986. A total of 17 teams took part. The CSKA Moscow defended the title for the eighth time in a row.

Mode and participants

The national champions of the game year 1984/85 of the European members of the IIHF were qualified for the competition. The competition was played in the knockout system in a two-legged manner. The final was played in a group of five in the mode everyone-against-everyone.

The qualifying games were played on October 10 and 24, 1985. Four teams played the two qualifiers for the first round.

2nd round

The second round games were played in February 1986. The five winners of the first round and the five seeded participants - Ilves Tampere, SB Rosenheim, Södertälje SK, ASD Dukla Jihlava and the defending champion CSKA Moscow - played the five qualifiers for the final tournament.
