The European Ice Hockey Cup in the 1979/80 season was the 15th edition of the competition of the same name by the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF . The competition was held in several rounds from October 16, 1979 to August 24, 1980. A total of 16 teams from 16 nations took part. The 15th European Cup winner was the Soviet team from CSKA Moscow , which prevailed in the final tournament against Tappara Tampere , Slovan ChZJD Bratislava and MoDo AIK Örnsköldsvik .

Mode and participants

The national champions of the game year 1978/79 of the European members of the IIHF were qualified for the competition. The tournament was played in a knockout system with two games per round. A first leg and a second leg were played. The team that won more games advanced to the next round. If necessary, an additional penalty shootout was carried out to determine the winner of the round.
