Emmelie de Forest (born February 28, 1993 in Randers as Emmelie Charlotte-Victoria Engstrøm ) is a Danish pop singer who won the Eurovision Song Contest for Denmark in 2013 with the song Only Teardrops .

life and career

Emmelie de Forest is the daughter of a Dane and a Swede, Ingvar Engstrøm (1938-2010), who took the surname de Forest in old age . Her parents divorced when she was a child. De Forest has been singing since she was nine years old, including in a church and gospel choir. When she was 14, she worked with the Scottish musician Fraser Neill . In the course of the following four years they performed together at various festivals, concerts and in various cultural venues.

De Forest grew up with her mother in Mariager ( North Jutland ). She has four siblings. In 2011, at the age of 18, she moved to the Danish capital, Copenhagen , to study singing at the Complete Vocal Institute . Since 2012 she has been writing lyrics and recording her first songs in the studio. Emmelie de Forest also plays guitar .

On January 26, 2013, she won with Only Teardrops in the Danish preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 in Malmö over nine competitors through the audience rating. In the jury evaluation she was tied with the favorite and runner-up Mohamed Ali . On February 1, 2013, her song entered the Danish charts at number 2. In March 2013 she signed a record deal with Universal Music and released her first solo album on May 6, 2013, also entitled Only Teardrops . The album was produced by Peter Bjørnskov, Jacob Glaesner, Thomas Stensgaard and Frederik Thaae. In May 2013 she represented her home country at the ESC, achieved the highest number of points in the semifinals, as well as in the final on May 18, 2013, which she won with 281 points.

Originally, part of the marketing strategy for the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 was that de Forest was a great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria of England through a connection between King Edward VII and an unknown Austrian princess and also related to the British politician Maurice Arnold de Forest (1879– 1968). However, since there was no evidence of this, the Danish broadcaster Danmarks Radio (DR), responsible for the contribution, rejected this part of the marketing .

The uniform jackets selected for the two drummers at the appearance for the Danish preliminary decision were recognized as Waffen SS uniforms after the recording . In the video, stripes on the sleeves were over-pixelated and different jackets were used for the ESC finale. The Danish radio apologized and declared the choice of costumes as an unintentional mistake, the jackets would come from the DR fund for a historical TV series.

On August 18, 2014, the first single Drunk Tonight of their second album was released.

In 2017 she composed, together with the British band The Treatment and Lawrie Martin, Never Give Up On You, the British contribution to the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 in Kiev . The song performed by Lucie Jones won the British preliminary round and took 15th place in the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest.
