Marija Naumova ( Russian Мария Наумова , [ maˈriːja naˈumova ]; born June 23, 1973 in Riga ) is a Latvian pop and musical singer. Your international artist name is Marie N .

biography

Marija's parents are of Russian origin. Marija came to the theater in early childhood through her mother, who is a professional actress, and played her first role at the age of 10. As a singer, however, she first appeared in 1994 when she took part in national talent competitions. From 1997 she worked with Raimonds Pauls , who composed and published her first solo album До светлых слёз in Russian . Since she performed on the occasion of George Gershwin's 100th birthday in 1998 and another concert with her participation was released on CD, she has had a strong presence in the Latvian media.

She received criticism from Estonia and Lithuania for her statements that Russian artists in the Baltic republics are discriminated against for ethnic and political reasons.

In 2000 she took part for the first time in the Latvian preliminary decision of the Eurovision Song Contest , from which, however, Prāta Vētra with singer Renārs Kaupers emerged victorious, who finally took third place in Stockholm . Her first album in Latvian, Ieskaties acīs , was released in the same year in collaboration with renowned Latvian classical music artists such as Elīna Garanča . This album received the platinum award in 2001 in Latvia as the best-selling phonogram.

After a second place behind Arnis Mednis in the same year in the Euro Vision Song Contest preliminary round with the song Hey Boy Follow Me won this in the following year with I Wanna and was in Tallinn winner of the Euro Vision Song Contest in 2002 , she in 2003 together with Renārs Kaupers from Prāta Vētra in Riga moderated. Commercially, I Wanna was a big flop and one of the most unsuccessful winning songs of all time.

Naumova is a goodwill envoy from UNICEF .
