Erik Vendt (born January 9, 1982 in North Easton , Massachusetts ) is an American freestyle and medley swimmer .

Career

Erik Vendt lives in Ann Arbor and studies at the University of Southern California . He is trained by Bob Bowman and starts for Club Wolverine . In 1998 he won his first US titles in the 400 m and 1500 m freestyle. Vendt started at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney , where he won the silver medal in the 400 m medley. Over 1500 m freestyle, on this route he was also US champion of the year, he also reached the final, in which he was sixth. The American also won silver in the 400 m medley at the 2001 World Cup in Fukuoka . He won the title at the US championships, as well as the 1500 meter freestyle title. In 2002 Vendt won the US title in the 1500 m freestyle for the fourth time and came second in the 400 m freestyle and medley.

At the 2003 World Championships in Barcelona , Vendt won the bronze medal in the 1500 m freestyle. In 2004 he competed in the Olympic Games for the second time . In Athens, like in Sydney in 2000, he won the bronze medal in the 400 m medley, and in the 1500 m freestyle he was eliminated in the preliminary stages. In 2006, Vendt became US champion in the 1500 m freestyle for the fifth time. He also won over this route at the Pan-Pacific Championships in Victoria . The 2007 World Championships in Melbourne were less successful . Vendt made it to the final in the 1500 m freestyle, but only finished eighth and last. In the 800 m freestyle he was eliminated in the preliminary run.

At the US Trials in 2008 to qualify for the Olympic Games in Beijing , Vendt achieved only a few good results. He finished sixth over 200 m freestyle, third over 400 m freestyle, and fourth over 1500 m. So he only qualified for relay assignments. He was used in the run-up to the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay and qualified with this for the final. There he was not used in the victorious season. Vendt is the US record holder in the 1500 m freestyle.
