John Henry "Rob" Derbyshire (born November 29, 1878 in Manchester , † July 30, 1938 in Baslow ) was a British swimmer and water polo player .
Career
Derbyshire won a total of ten individual competitions of the Amateur Swimming Association in England between 1898 and 1904 , including six victories in 100 yards freestyle competitions. In 1907, he became the first Briton to swim this distance in less than a minute. He took part in the 1900 Olympic Games in Paris , where he won the gold medal in water polo, which was previously considered a swimming sport. At the Olympic Intermediate Games in Athens in 1906 , he took part in the 4 × 250 m freestyle relay and won the bronze medal. With the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay, he won the gold medal two years later at the next regular games in London. He took part again in Stockholm in 1912 in the 100 m freestyle competition, but could not reach the final.
Derbyshire worked full time as a lifeguard.
