George Prifold Harrison (born April 9, 1939 in Berkeley - † October 3, 2011 ) was an American swimmer .

Life

Harrison was born to Robert D. Harrison and Caroline Harrison. He had a brother. After attending Acalanes High School, he studied at Stanford University . There he completed his studies in 1965. He later held a managerial position in Pleasanton at Lee & Associates , specializing in investment and industrial brokerage . He was married to his wife Susan for more than half a century, had three children, Karen, Kristen and Michael, and was a grandfather of two.

Sports

Harrison won the AAU championship in 1955 . He took part in the Olympic Games in 1956 and 1960. At the Pan American Games in 1959, he finished second on the 400-meter freestyle course. His greatest achievement was winning the gold medal with the USA's 4 × 200 meter freestyle relay at the 1960 Summer Olympics . In the same year he set two world records on the 400-meter medley course. Even with his relay Olympic victory in Rome, he and his team were able to improve the world record that had been valid until then. At Stanford University he was inducted into the Hall of Fame as a swimmer .

Harrison died in 2011 after complications from surgery.
