Harald Ettl (born December 7, 1947 in Gleisdorf ) is an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ). He was Minister of Health from 1989 to 1992 and a member of the European Parliament from 1996 to 2009 .

Life

From 1969 to 1971 Harald Ettl was a technical employee at Karl Eybl, a carpet factory in Ebergassing. For the next two years he was union secretary of the Textile, Clothing and Leather Union. From 1973 to 1984 he worked as central secretary.

From 1989–1991 Ettl was Federal Minister for Health and Public Service, and from 1991/1992 Federal Minister for Health, Sport and Consumer Protection. From 1984 to 2000 he was also chairman of the Textile, Clothing and Leather trade union. To this day he is Vice President of the Metal-Textile-Food Union. From 1996 to 2009 Harald Ettl was a member of the European Parliament.

Ettl was deputy chairman of the General Accident Insurance Fund from 1978 to 1989. During the same period, he was chairman of the section committee on accident insurance in the main association of Austrian social insurance institutions . From 1987 to 1999 Ettl was chairman of the EU committee in the ÖGB, and from 1995 and 1996 a member of the economic and social committee of the EU. From 1993 to 2001 he was chairman of the Association for Consumer Information, since 2000 he has been Vice-Chairman of the Metal-Textile Union, now Metal-Textile-Food, and since 2004 Vice-President of the International Textile, Clothing and Leather Workers Association ( ITBVL).

Main focus of work in the European Parliament

Ettl is a member of the European Parliament's committees for social affairs and employment and the committee for economic and monetary affairs. He had a seat on the committee of inquiry into the collapse of the Equitable Life Assurance Society and was a member of the delegation of the EU-Bulgaria Joint Parliamentary Committee and the delegation for EU relations with the Mashreq countries. In addition to his duties on parliamentary committees, he is currently a member of the delegation for relations with India.
