István Szondy (born December 29, 1925 in Berettyóújfalu ; † May 31, 2017 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian pentathlete and rider .

Career

István Szondy competed three times in the Olympic Games . In 1948 he finished 18th in the modern pentathlon singles in London . He then won two medals in Helsinki in 1952 : bronze in the individual and gold with the team, which, in addition to Szondy, also included Gábor Benedek and Aladár Kovácsi . At the 1956 games in Stockholm he started in show jumping . Both in the individual and with the team, he was eliminated in the second round.

At the world championships in modern pentathlon Szondy was first successful in 1953 when he became vice world champion in singles. In 1954 he was third in the individual, but with the team he won the world championship. He defended this title with the team in 1955 .
