overview
The old town of Erfurt is one of the most church-rich old towns in Germany, as the parish districts were structured in particularly small parts.
- In the old town there were 38 church buildings (including the monastery churches), of which 27 are preserved today and 11 no longer exist.
- In total there are still 35 church buildings in the inner city districts (Erfurt + Vorstädte + Ilversgehofen + Melchendorf), of which 13 are Protestant, 12 Catholic and 4 profane. Of 5 churches only the tower still exists and 1 church is in ruins.
- There are a total of 42 other churches in the Erfurt villages, of which 36 are Protestant and 6 are Catholic.
- Thus there are a total of 77 historical church buildings in Erfurt today.
- In the old town of Erfurt there were also 14 monasteries, most of which also had a monastery church. These monastery churches are already included above.

Steeples
What is striking about the steeples of the Gothic parish churches is that, in contrast to most of the other large medieval towns, they have a uniform design. They consist of a square stone shaft with a height of 23 meters ( Martinikirche ) to 37 meters ( Agidienkirche ), which is followed by a high, pointed helmet. This is made of wood (except for Johannes and Andreas Church). The tallest of these “unified church towers” is the Nikolaikirche with a height of 60 meters. The design language used in the construction of the Luther Church in 1926, which also received one of the uniform church towers, was quoted .
Village churches
A special feature is that the Erfurt rural villages were divided up due to the biconfessional nature of the city of Erfurt in the early modern period. Some villages became Protestant villages, others remained Catholic (the only Catholic village in Erfurt that is not a district today is Witterda in the Sömmerda district). These are highlighted in bold. Churches that are not village churches are shown in italics.
