Luctuosissimi eventus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The encyclical Luctuosissimi eventus of October 28, 1956 is the call of Pope Pius XII. on “Public Prayers for Peace and Freedom of the Hungarian People”.

It was with deep dismay and sadness that the Pope learned of the events in Hungary (note: Hungarian popular uprising of October 23, 1956), and lamented the bloodshed that had resulted from this shocking massacre . Here the rights of civil society have been disregarded and the dignity of men and women has been violated. With the call to prayer, he asks for the end of this blood bath and hopes that real peace, justice and freedom may re-enter.
