Saeculo exeunte octavo

With the encyclical Saeculo exeunte octavo , dated June 2, 1940, Pope Pius XII pays tribute to the 800th anniversary of the Portuguese Independence Day . With this apostolic circular, the Pope addresses the Portuguese episcopate and underlines the need for missionary work .

About the importance of missionary work

This is not a complete missionary encyclical and yet Pius XII. to the highly praised missionary work of the Portuguese clergy : God expects great achievements from his staff and it is of high importance to continue the missionary work as it is carried out by the local clergy . He refers to the remarks on charity in the encyclical Rerum ecclesiae of his predecessor Pius XI. In one of the next sections Pius XII takes up. back again to this encyclical and underlines that missionary work must be seen as a companion and helper on the way to evangelization . The core work should take place in the dioceses and if there is a need for help, then this should be connected with the missionary work.

Ultimately, Pius XII. taking into account the apostolic letter Maximum illud of Pope Benedict XV. again points out the special value of missionary work and recommends important saints such as St. Franz Xaver .
