history

Mauchiga was the scene of fighting between the FALINTIL and the Indonesian occupiers in 1982 .

On July 6, 1982, the FALINTIL and local resistance groups planned a series of attacks on Indonesian military posts in the Mauchiga area. The plans were betrayed. On July 10, the Indonesian armed forces began searching every house in Mauchiga, Goulora and Hato-Quero. 30 people were arrested and taken to the military headquarters in Ainaro , including 13 who were involved in the planning on July 6th. More arrests followed over the next few days. On August 20, 1982, the FALINTIL attacked several Indonesian bases in the region with men from Mauchiga and Dare ( Cabalaki uprising ). On the same day, Indonesian soldiers launched retaliatory actions. By August 24, the troops destroyed and looted the villages in the region. By January 1986, 464 Sucos residents (around 20% of the population) had been forcibly resettled to Atauro , Ainaro, Dotik and Dare, including 226 women and 180 children. In this way social ties were to be destroyed and operational support for the resistance cut off. Numerous rapes during this period were also documented.

Between 1978 and 1984 the Indonesians and pro-Indonesian militias killed a total of 117 Mauchigas residents in the war, 42 of whom were civilians. 145 people died of hunger and disease as a result of the conflict, especially during the forced relocations. Only one of them was a fighter in the resistance.

politics

In the 2004/2005 elections, Guilherme Rodrigues Soares was elected Chefe de Suco and confirmed in his office in 2009 and 2016 .
