Local traffic in Münster

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The transport in Münster comprises a transport network which is predominantly of urban and regional bus and regional train - and regional express lines there, which have several stations and stopping point in the city of Münster. There is no rail-based city transport in Münster, for example by underground trains, trams, light rail vehicles or S-Bahn trains, which means that this is the most populous German municipality without a corresponding offer. There was a tram running in Münster , but it was completely discontinued and dismantled. Münster is in the network area of the Westphalian tariff. In addition to local public transport and motorized private transport, everyday mobility by bicycle is of considerable importance, which is why Münster is colloquially known as the "bicycle capital of Germany".

City bus routes

Bus traffic in Münster is mainly operated by Mobile , a branch of Stadtwerke Münster GmbH. There are a total of 22 city bus routes, some of which are linked to regional bus routes (routes 7 and 22) and some of which serve several branches (routes 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 10 and 22). Except for lines 18, 19 and 20, all lines go via the main train station, which is the central transfer point. The lines 33 and 34 run as ring lines from the main station on a ring route around the city center. In school transport, some additional buses (marked with an E in front of the line number) take different routes than usual. For example, the E5 takes a shortcut via Steinfurter Straße or the E8 via Prinzipalmarkt .

Since the express bus has fewer stops, the travel time is significantly reduced compared to the express bus. The aim of the new express bus lines is to create a particularly fast and modern local transport system so that fewer people use individual motorized transport.

City buses during the day

Daytime traffic takes place Mon-Fri from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., on weekends only from 8 a.m. The city buses are based on Monday through Saturday every 20 minutes. An exception is line 5, which runs between the main station and Berg Fidel every ten minutes, and the two ring lines, which run every 15 minutes. The minibus lines 18, 19 and 20 run once an hour. Thanks to amplifiers during rush hour, the travel distance of many lines is reduced to ten minutes at least once a day, with line 6 even at 5-minute intervals. On Sundays and public holidays, the traffic is thinned out to a 60-minute cycle (morning) or 30-minute cycle (afternoon), there are no trips on the 5 to Berg Fidel. The ring lines only run every 45 minutes.

Night buses

Night traffic runs on weekdays from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. and on weekend nights from 9 p.m. to 8 a.m. every 30 minutes, with every hour after 1 a.m. (on Saturdays from 6 a.m. again every half hour) The 6 lines meet at the main train station and depart together. Night traffic is supported by taxi buses in the outlying areas.

Regional and express buses

The buses to the region (both regional and express buses) mostly run once an hour. Lines S90 / 92 (every 30 min) and R72 / 73 (together every 20 min, adapted to line 7) are an exception.

Local transport tariffs

The city of Münster was part of the transport association Münsterland (VGM); in addition to the city of Münster, the districts of Steinfurt , Borken , Coesfeld and Warendorf are among the shareholders. On August 1, 2017, the VGM tariff was added to the Westphalian tariff , the newly founded Westfalentarif GmbH has its administrative headquarters in Bielefeld . The Westphalia tariff is a merger of the traffic community cathedral country as well as the rate of the traffic community Ruhr lip , the traffic community Westphalia south , the traffic group Paderborn-Hoxter and the OWL-transport company that legally continue as shareholders are active. The Westphalian tariff , which was founded in 2017, has no influence on the NRW tariff , which has been in existence for a long time , but since the changeover, a Westphalian tariff ticket has been required on some routes instead of a NRW tariff ticket, which is somewhat cheaper. In Münster, the Schöne-Tag NRW and Schöne-Fahrt NRW season tickets are also valid on all modes of transport, as well as the Quer-durch-Land ticket for local rail transport.

Connection to long-distance traffic

You can get on and change trains at the main train station. There is also a long-distance bus stop within walking distance of the main train station.

Electric buses

Stadtwerke Münster has been pursuing a strategy for several years to increase the use of electrically powered buses in Münster. This is funded through the EU-wide research project ZeEUS (Zero Emission Urban Bus System) . In 2015, the first e-buses were used in Münster. By 2030, 100 electric buses are to run on the city bus routes.

Muensterland S-Bahn

On December 2, 2019, a concept for a S-Bahn Münsterland was presented as part of the “Mobiles Münsterland” project, which is to be completed by 2030. The concept provides for all railway lines leaving Münster to be operated by a half-hour S-Bahn / regional train and an hourly express line. To this end, five new stops are to be built on existing routes in Münster, and the Münster-Sendenhorst railway line is to be reactivated, which would go hand in hand with seven additional new stations. In addition, Stadtwerke Münster is increasingly strengthening bus traffic with every change of schedule. A special feature of the upcoming timetable change is the permanent introduction of additional buses in autumn and winter, which were previously only used spontaneously.
