history

Railway network around Heidelberg

As early as 1840 Heidelberg was connected to the first section of the Rhine Valley Railway from Mannheim . For this purpose, a terminus station was built near today's Bismarckplatz. The Rhine Valley Railway was extended to Karlsruhe via Bruchsal in 1843 , to Offenburg in 1844 , to Freiburg im Breisgau in 1845 and finally reached Basel in 1855 . In 1846 Heidelberg was connected to the Main-Neckar Railway from Frankfurt am Main . Further opening dates for routes built by the Baden State Railways:

  • 1862 Heidelberg - Neckargemünd - Meckesheim - Mosbach; this line was extended in 1866 from Neckarelz to Würzburg and in 1868/1869 from Meckesheim to Jagstfeld (where it reached the line to Heilbronn ).
  • 1873 Heidelberg - Schwetzingen
  • In 1879 the Neckar Valley Railway Neckargemünd - Eberbach - Neckarelz - Jagstfeld (- Heilbronn) was opened

This completed the Baden State Railroad's route network around Heidelberg.

Suburban railways

In 1883 the Leferenz brothers received a concession for a local railway from Heidelberg to Schriesheim and on to Weinheim , which they could not realize for financial reasons. In 1887 they sold the concession to Herrmann Bachstein , who had already received the concession for the Mannheim – Weinheim route in 1886. The central administration for Secundairbahnen Herrmann Bachstein opened the Weinheim – Mannheim line in the same year, and in 1890 the connection from Weinheim along the Bergstrasse via Hirschberg , Schriesheim, Dossenheim and Handschuhsheim to Heidelberg.

In 1891 the line from Heidelberg via Wieblingen , Edingen and Neckarhausen to Mannheim was completed. The railway was transferred to the Süddeutsche Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (SEG) in 1897 and became the Oberrheinische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (OEG) in 1911

tram

The history of inner-city public transport in Heidelberg began in 1885 with the first horse-drawn tram route from the main train station to the market square. On July 23, 1901, the age of the electric tram began with the first route from Heidelberg to Wiesloch . The tram network was continuously expanded until 1959. From 1962 on, tram routes were gradually shut down, and in 1976 even the busiest tram route from Bismarckplatz across the main street to Karlstor was shut down. This development was reversed in 1988 when a route was extended from the Bunsen-Gymnasium to the Blumenthalstrasse West stop (now the Technologiepark). In the following years, more routes were slowly added. At present there are plans to extend the route to neighboring cities.

Train

On December 14, 2003, the RheinNeckar S-Bahn started operations. In addition to the existing stations in Heidelberg, the newly built stations Heidelberg Weststadt / Südstadt and Heidelberg Orthopädie are served. The name “Heidelberg West” was originally planned for the Heidelberg-Pfaffengrund / Wieblingen station, and “Heidelberg Franz-Knauff-Straße” for Heidelberg-Weststadt / Südstadt.

omnibus

Opening of HSB bus routes:

  • September 8, 1948: Kirchheim - Walldorf
  • February 21, 1949: Heiligkreuzsteinach - Schönau - Neckarsteinach - HSB ferry Kleingemünd
  • September 20, 1951: Bismarckstrasse - Speyerershof - Posseltslust - Kohlhof

  • November 22, 1954: Central Station - Castle - Wolfsbrunnen
  • February 10, 1955: Hauptbahnhof - Hegenichhof (closed on September 1, 1971)
  • April 22, 1962: Line to Thingstätte (Heiligenberg)

The bus station for the regional buses was relocated on August 6, 1962 from Sofienstrasse to the Kurfürsten-Anlage car park.

From August 31, 1962, one and a half- deckers were used on the bus route to Neckargemünd (tram replacement) .

On September 7, 1964, the rail bus route from Kirrlach via Roth and Walldorf to Heidelberg was opened.

On September 1, 1971, the lines to Wolfsbrunnen, Hegenichhof and Heiligenberg were discontinued as part of a heavily thinned out timetable due to a financial crisis.

On March 10, 1973, bus route 29 was extended from Boxberg to Emmertsgrund.

From June 16 to 25, 1989, an electric bus from Vetter drove six hours a day every half hour from Sankt-Anna-Gasse on Bismarckplatz through the main street to the market square by the Heiliggeistkirche.

In November 1999 the Handschuhsheimer "Hangbus" from Hans-Thoma-Platz to Turnerbrunnen, today's line 38, was set up. Even then, Discipulus drove on this line on behalf of HSB.

Joint public transport company

In 2004, the large urban transport companies in the Rhine-Neckar area founded the Rhein-Neckar-Verkehr GmbH (RNV). For this purpose, HSB brought part of its vehicle fleet and its shares in the central workshop into the joint company. The concessions and the infrastructure remained with HSB. From March 1, 2005, the new company operated the lines on behalf of the parent company. On October 1, 2009, the line permits were transferred to the RNV. Since March 1, 2005, RNV has also been responsible for maintaining and expanding the infrastructure, which is still owned by the parent company. The cars were all provided with the RNV logo, and in the near future they will receive the RNV corporate design when repainting is due . The appearance of the stops in the RNV traffic area is currently being standardized.
