Local transport in Bremen
Local public transport in Bremen is carried out in regular service with railways , trams , S-Bahn , regional and city buses from various transport companies. The uniform tariff of the Bremen-Lower Saxony transport association applies in the city and the surrounding area .
city traffic
In the area of the city of Bremen , Bremer Straßenbahn AG , BSAG for short, operates the tram and bus routes. In 2012 it carried around 103.1 million passengers, i.e. around 282,000 every day. In 2019, BSAG carried around 290,000 passengers a day. Line 1 was used most frequently with around 58,000 passengers a day; bus route 25 was the bus route used most frequently with around 23,000 people a day.
Planning for U- and S-Bahn lines
In the very elongated city of Bremen, unlike in the other rather compact German cities with over and around 500,000 inhabitants such as Leipzig, Dresden and Duisburg, there are no subways or subway-like systems.
Subway
1952 there were the first underground tram plans . Several expert opinions endorsed the relocation of tram lines 2 and 3 in the city center between Ostertor and Doventor in a tunnel. In 1958, for the first time, a report by Professor Walther Lambert from the TH Stuttgart required three tunnel sections for the tram lines in the city center. In 1959, there was also a small report for an underground tram line .
The first report by Professor W. Grabe, which provided for the construction of four full underground lines , was published in 1967. According to a forecast at the time, the city of Bremen should have around 800,000 inhabitants in 2000; but that was unrealistic. Höltge (1992) notes: "Professor Grabe reckoned with an expansion time of 50 years and 1.2 billion DM costs".
Train
In 1970 Grave's subway appraisal was completed by a S-Bahn project drawn up by Professor Rolf Kracke from the TH Hannover . This appraiser calculated investment costs of 1.586 billion for construction stages I to III. DM.
The concepts for the U- and S-Bahn were not implemented. Critics therefore criticize the insufficient average travel speed of public transport, which has to share the streets with other road users on the routes in the city center and the sections close to the city center. Other users, on the other hand, rate it as positive that the stops are also on the surface in the city center, making them easy and quick to reach and easy for visitors to the city to perceive.
In 1969 and 1972, the Young Socialists of Bremen decided on a Bremen transport concept . They criticized the target population of 800,000, which was too high. They demanded the S-Bahn lines S1 to S3 on the existing railways and five above-ground urban railway lines on largely their own tracks.
Realizations
Today (2014) the tram (light rail) is run on five above-ground routes on mostly dedicated tracks and with eight lines.
With the introduction of the regional S-Bahn Bremen / Lower Saxony , the RS1 line with 17 stops in the city and 15-minute intervals during rush hour traffic can also provide inner-city transport services.
Day traffic: tram
The tram network forms the core of public urban transport in Bremen. Its focus is with three nodes in Bremen's old town, which is located directly on the right bank of the Weser . From there, eight lines extend in a star shape over eleven line branches, which open up the elongated urban area on the right bank of the Weser and the densely populated districts on the left bank of the Weser, but not the city district of Bremen-Nord. Since the late 1990s , steps have been taken to connect settlements and suburbs further outside the inner city area; in 2014, Lilienthal, the first suburb in the Lower Saxony area, was opened up.
Infrastructure and vehicles
The Bremen tram runs almost continuously on two tracks on standard gauge tracks (there is only one track on a short section in Lilienthal, Lower Saxony), some of which are laid in the street space, but mostly on a special track . On the outer branches of the routes to Arsten, Huchting and Osterholz there are also sections on independent railway tracks , some of which are elevated.
The route network of Bremer Straßenbahn AG covers 620 km, of which 505.4 km as a bus network and 114.6 km as a rail network.
In Bremen go way vehicles , the turning loops need to change direction. At the beginning of the 1990s, BSAG was the first company in Germany to improve the barrier-free accessibility of its means of transport with series of low-floor vehicles . In 2005 around thirty of the older high-floor trains, each consisting of a multiple unit and a sidecar, were still in use, but they have been gradually replaced by new low-floor vehicles since the end of the same year. To speed up the operation, 117 were from 1999 to 2003 for 7.5 million euros traffic signals equipped in the urban area with priority circuits for trams and buses. The operation is converted to vehicles with a car body width of 2.65 meters. After the start of expanding the center-to-center distance between lines 1 and 6 in 2005, all lines except for lines 2 and 10 have been accessible with the wider vehicles since autumn 2013.
The three hubs: Hauptbahnhof, Domsheide and Am Brill are particularly important . A six-track transfer station for trams and city buses was opened at the main train station in 1999, and six of the eight railway lines run on it. Instead, only lines 2 and 3 drive via Am Brill through the pedestrian zone in Obernstrasse , which is Bremen's main shopping street, and across Domsheide. With the Bürgermeister-Smidt- Bridge following the Brillkreuzung and the Wilhelm-Kaisen-Bridge near the Domsheide, two spatially separate crossings of the Weser are available.
In the inner city area, the track network has a number of additional switches , track triangles and travel options, so that most tram lines can be rerouted on a small scale during construction work or route closures. Historical special trains use these additional tracks for tourist tours through the city center.

The three lines followed by an "S" are high-speed tram lines that pass a number of stops without stopping, making travel times a few minutes shorter. Another line "3S" was discontinued on October 2, 2014 after almost 18 years.
Timetable offer
Most of the tram lines run every 10 minutes during the day, Monday to Saturday, every 20 minutes in the evening and Sunday, and every 30 minutes from around midnight. Exceptions:
- Line 1 runs every 7.5 minutes during rush hour in the afternoon between 2:30 and 6:30 p.m.
- Line 4 runs on the Arsten ↔ Kirchbachstraße section during rush hour in the morning and in the afternoon every 5 minutes. On the Kirchbachstraße ↔ Borgfeld section, every third train runs as line 4S to Lilienthal at these times. The remaining journeys end in Borgfeld.
- Line 5 only runs Monday to Saturday, every 20 minutes. Start of operation is on weekdays from 5:30 a.m. and on Saturdays from 9:15 a.m. The closing time is Monday to Saturday at around 8:50 p.m.
- Line 6 runs between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. and between 2.30 p.m. and 7 p.m. every 6 minutes. Between approx. 1 p.m. and 6 p.m., individual repeater trains on line 6E operate on the route between the university and Wilhelm-Kaisen-Brücke. These trips take place during the lecture period at the university.
- Line 8 runs continuously only every 20 minutes. From about 8:30 p.m. it only runs on the northern section of Kulenkampffallee - Hauptbahnhof - Brill - Westerstraße and via Domsheide back to the main station and Kulenkampffallee.
Expansion plans
The tram network is to be expanded further. The aim of the expansion plans listed below is to improve the connection of external settlements to the inner city of Bremen, with the extension of line 4 to Lilienthal-Falkenberg, the border to Lower Saxony being crossed for the first time.
Specifically, the following expansion plans are currently being pursued:
line | Planned construction work | execution | ||
---|---|---|---|---|
1 | South end | Extension of Huchting, Roland-Center over the route of the Bremen-Thedinghauser Eisenbahn and Heinrich-Plett-Allee to Mittelhuchting, Brusselser Straße | 6 new stops | Fall 2020–2024 |
1/2 | Eastern branch | Connection of both lines between Julius-Brecht-Allee and Bennigsenstraße | 2 new stops | Vsl. Spring 2021-2024 |
8th | South end | Extension of Huchting, Roland-Center over the route of the Bremen-Thedinghauser railway to the state border Varreler Landstrasse | 1 new stop | Fall 2020–2024 |
8th | South end | Continuation via the Bremen-Thedinghauser railway from the state border, Dovemoorstraße through Stuhr to Weyhe -Leeste, Hagener Straße | 12 new stops | Time currently open |
In the coalition agreement of the red-green-red coalition, the following further possible expansion projects are mentioned:
line | Planned construction work | |
---|---|---|
2/3/10 | Western end | Extension from Gröpelingen to Oslebshausen |
2/10 | Eastern end | Extension from Sebaldsbrück to Osterholz |
3 | Eastern end | Extension from the Weser weir over Malerstraße to Sebaldsbrück |
4/6 | Riensberg / Horn | Connection of both lines between Riensberg and Horn. Realization of a fast connection between Lilienthal and the city center |
5 | Western branch | A more direct route to Überseestadt , for example via Konsul-Smidt-Straße |
8th | North / East branch | Extension from Kulenkampffallee to the university. Between the stops at Kulenkampffallee and Wätjenstraße or via Parkallee and Universitätsallee |
In addition, the BSAG believes that long-term connections to Findorff and the Neue Vahr are conceivable. A tram connection to Woltmershausen will not be pursued for the time being. Furthermore, the planning progress of the individual expansion projects differs immensely. A start of construction for the sections Sebaldsbrück - Osterholz or Kulenkampffallee - University could already be realized from the end of 2023. The Gröpelingen - Oslebshausen section, for example, can only be realized well after 2025.
Day traffic: omnibus
The city bus routes serve the areas not served by rail traffic and connect the tram lines with each other. In some cases they replace discontinued tram routes.
Vehicles and infrastructure
The bus fleet consists entirely of low-floor vehicles, of which in June 2020 181 as articulated, 48 as 12-m buses and 2 as 8.6-m buses were in the inventory of BSAG. That is 20 articulated buses more and 14 12-meter buses less than in July 2009. Vehicles from the manufacturers MAN and Mercedes-Benz are mainly used, in some cases also Solaris. 65 vehicles from the manufacturer Mercedes-Benz also meet the Euro 6 emissions standard. Priority circuits have been set up for the traffic lights at almost all traffic lights with bus traffic.

Lines 61, 65, 66, 80 and 81 sometimes only run a few times a day and sometimes with call-line taxis.
Lines 77 and 87 were added to the timetable for line 677 at the end of 2017.
Line 99 was discontinued at the end of 2016 and incorporated into line 98.
When the timetable changed on December 10, 2017, there were minor route changes on lines 90, 91, 92 and 95. Lines 94 and 95 were swapped in the direction of Gröpelingen and Marßel. Line 96 will be replaced by lines 91, 92 and 95 during the week. Instead of these lines, line 96 runs on a new ring route on the weekend. Line 97 and the associated section via Am Knick have been discontinued. This measure should improve the connections to the regional S-Bahn line 1 and at the same time save overcapacity.
In the course of the timetable change, the following line colors were changed: Line 27: separated from line 26 in orange Line 61: light blue Line 65/66: light green Line 80: light green The color changes of lines 65, 66 and 80 are intended to replace the poorly recognizable, faded green. Line 61 got a new color to stand out from the new color of lines 65/66.
With the timetable change on May 4, 2020, line 51 was integrated into line 26 and line 53 was assigned to 27.
Night traffic
The night traffic network is geared towards an all-round connection at the main train station and only serves the most important traffic axes from there. The night lines N1, N4 and N10 operate as trams, the other night lines as a bus. On weekdays there are two trips at midnight and at 0:30 a.m. and one in the morning at 4:30 a.m. The night lines N1, N7 and N10 also run again at 1:30 a.m., the lines N1 and N10 again at 3:45 a.m. The N6 line runs every 30 minutes on weekdays. On the weekend nights, the night trains and buses also leave every 30 minutes until the daytime network starts again.
Since January 1, 2007, a surcharge of one euro per person per night had to be paid for using the night lines (until 4:00 a.m.). Holders of a MIAplus ticket, a JobTicket, a youth leisure ticket, a BahnCard 100 or a combination or night ticket were exempt from this surcharge. Since April 1, 2007, after strong protests, even the holders of a VBN semester ticket no longer had to pay a night surcharge. At the beginning of 2020 the night surcharge was abolished.

Regional traffic
Local rail transport
Local rail passenger transport primarily fulfills the function of regional transport. Five regional express trains (RE), four regional trains (RB) and four lines of the Regio-S-Bahn Bremen / Lower Saxony (RS) connect the municipality of Bremen to the surrounding area. The RS 1 line is also of great importance for city traffic in Bremen-Nord . A special feature is the Leipzig – Emden (–Norddeich Mole) intercity line, which is approved for local transport tickets in the Bremen – Emden (–Norddeich Mole) section.
