Local public transport in Ulm

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The local public transport in Ulm includes the tram and city bus network of Stadtwerke Ulm / Neu-Ulm (SWU). Local transport in the surrounding Donau-Iller region is provided by regional trains and regional buses operated by Deutsche Bahn and other transport companies.

Local public transport in and around Ulm is subject to the collective tariff structure of the Donau-Iller-Nahverkehrsverbund (DING). The city of Ulm and parts of the Neu-Ulm district are responsible for ordering inner-city transport . The regional traffic is tendered by the affected districts and the Baden-Württemberg local transport company .

Regional traffic

Regional trains

Responsible for the operation of the rail traffic are (as of December 15, 2019) DB Regio Bayern , DB ZugBus Regionalverkehr Alb-Bodensee (RAB), Südwestdeutsche Landesverkehrs-AG (SWEG / HzL), Agilis , Go-Ahead Baden-Württemberg and Swabian Alb Railway (SAB). The railway infrastructure companies involved are DB Netz , Erms-Neckar-Bahn and Stadtwerke Ulm / Neu-Ulm.

All regional trains in the Ulm area start or end except for one line in Ulm Central Station . Dedicated line numbers were only awarded for new transport contracts in the course of the last tenders by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Transport in 2019.

Train

The region does not have a S-Bahn , but plans have been underway since 2012 to develop such an operating concept under the name Regio-S-Bahn Donau-Iller. The states of Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria as well as the city of Ulm have signed a cooperation agreement that is intended to advance the specification of the project. The reactivation of the Ulm - Weißenhorn branch, which in the final concept represents one of the eight lines, can be seen as the first stage of this S-Bahn. At the beginning of 2020, the Bavarian Ministry of Transport announced that from December 2020 the two line branches on the Bavarian side will be designated as the Regio-S-Bahn using new railcars.

Regional bus

Surrounding communities are directly connected to the Ulm regional center by regional bus lines, recognizable by their two-digit line numbers beginning with line 21. In addition, the three-digit lines 585, 597, 737, 763, 850 and 870 with longer routes to Ulm are connected. All bus lines start and end at the central bus station (ZOB) in Ulm. The ZOB consists of two parts on both sides of the Ulm main station, the Ulm ZOB East and the Ulm ZOB West. The quality of service and the timing of the lines depend heavily on the locations served; on weekdays there are intervals of between 30 and a maximum of 120 minutes. A cycle timetable with a fixed cycle sequence is not used on all lines . At the weekend, the quality of service is very different, on some lines, especially on Sundays, only a few trips or no trips. On several regional lines, night buses from ZOB Ost are set up on Saturday / Sunday and sometimes Friday / Saturday nights.

city traffic

Urban public transport in Ulm and partially in Neu-Ulm is provided by Stadtwerke Ulm / Neu-Ulm as operator and concession holder . The current local transport plan for Ulm from 2015 provided for smaller improvements in the offer, which were implemented in several stages by January 1, 2020 together with a direct award of all line concessions in the city of Ulm for 22.5 years to the SWU. In the local transport plan, among other things, the technical equipment and the design regulations of all vehicles used are laid down. As in the past, subcontractors are used on some lines under the same conditions on behalf of the SWU.

The bus connection to the Neu-Ulm districts, with the exception of Ludwigsfeld and the city center, is more of a regional bus character, so these are included in the regional bus section.

During the off-peak and off-peak hours, i.e. every 15 and 30 minutes, the main lines 1, 2, 4, 5 and 7 wait for each other in a rendezvous system . These connections are awaited until the last vehicle arrives and all passengers have transferred. Stops at which this connection guarantee applies are Ehinger Tor, Hauptbahnhof, Ulm City Hall, Willy-Brandt-Platz and Egertweg. If the connection is missed due to the fault of the SWU, a replacement vehicle can be requested. There are also unilateral connections all day long (bus lines wait for trams) at the Kuhberg school center (lines 2 and 8), University South (lines 2 and 13) and in Söflingen (lines 1, 8 and 9 in both directions).

night bus

The night buses run on the nights from Friday to Saturday, from Saturday to Sunday and on the nights before public holidays from Ulm ZOB Ost at 1.30 a.m., 2.30 a.m. and 3.30 a.m. The line concessions for the night buses are held by SWU, with the exception of line N5, which is assigned to Gairing Omnibusverkehr.

On-call bus

An on-call bus system has been set up on lines 8, 9, 14 and 17 in the city of Ulm and is offered as a mobile shared taxi under the name MobilSAM. These replace the corresponding regular buses in times of low demand, with the exception of the MobilSAM 17, which is a separate line and is only offered on weekdays. In terms of tariffs, the collective taxes are fully integrated into the tariff network; in addition to a ticket, a fixed amount of 50 cents per trip is due. Boarding must be registered by telephone or online at least 30 minutes before departure.

In the Bavarian part of the region and in Neu-Ulm, an on-call bus system called the Pfiffibus is marketed. These lines each have a fixed start and end point at a train station and, after the arrival of the connecting train, go to the stops booked. The system replaces regional buses, especially in the evenings and on weekends. The Pfiffibuses can be used with a ticket for the DING area without a surcharge. A registration is required at least one hour before departure, except for boarding at the starting station.
