Local traffic in Hamm

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Local public transport in Hamm currently consists of bus lines from various operators and the local rail transport operated by Deutsche Bahn . Historically significant is the Hamm tram , which guaranteed the mobility of the people of Hammer until the early 1960s.

Companies

Local rail passenger transport in Hamm was operated exclusively by DB Regio NRW until 2008 . Since December 2008, the Eurobahn has been operating two regional train lines, and since December 2009 it has also been operating two regional express lines. Stadtwerke Hamm play a prominent role in the field of bus transport , but by no means have a monopoly. There are a number of other companies that operate bus routes, thereby improving the city's transport infrastructure.

The following companies operate local transport in Hamm:

  • DB Regio NRW based in Düsseldorf
  • eurobahn , a brand for local rail passenger transport (SPNV) of Keolis SA based in Hamm. The Eurobahn won the tender for the “Hellwegnetz” and has been serving the “Ems-Börde-Bahn” ( RB  89 Münster – Hamm – Paderborn and RB 69 Münster – Hamm – Bielefeld) in the Hamm area since the timetable change in December 2008 . In March 2007 it won the tender for the “Maas-Rhein-Lippe-Netz”. Since December 2009, it has also been operating the RE 3 (Düsseldorf – Oberhausen – Dortmund – Hamm) and RE 13 (Venlo – Mönchengladbach – Düsseldorf – Hagen – Hamm) lines for 16 years.
  • Stadtwerke Hamm . They are the most important provider of local public transport in Hamm. The Stadtwerke operated the tram network in Hammuntil 1961, today they are purely a bus company.
  • Regionalverkehr Ruhr-Lippe GmbH (RLG), like VKU, is part of the WVG group and thus a public-sector company that transports people and goods in Westphalia. It operates the R41 line in Hamm.

history

Train and tram

In 1847 Hamm was connected to the main line of the Cologne-Mindener Railway Company . A year later the Münster – Hamm railway line opened. In 1850 the Hamm – Warburg railway followed (initially: Hamm-Paderborn). In this way, Hamm (Westphalia) train station became the first traffic junction in Germany .

On October 19, 1898 , after a test drive on October 1, the first meter-gauge tram line in Hamm was opened by Elektrizitäts AG. The approximately 5.25-kilometer route led from Kronenburg through the city center to Vorsterhausen. The scheduled service could start the following day. On May 15, 1901 , another 2.5 kilometer stretch of route to the south of the city was put into operation from the city center. In 1903 the company Siemens-Schuckert took over the company and handed it over to the city in 1907 . On October 10, 1910 , the route from Westenschützenhof to Wiescherhöfen was opened with a length of around 3.26 kilometers. On September 16, 1913 , a section from Nordstrasse to Heessener Strasse that was separated from the rest of the network was put into operation. This route was extended to the northern suburbs on August 4, 1917 . Since it was not allowed to cross the state railway on Heessener Straße, it was divided into two parts until the railway line was raised in 1921 .

After the First World War, passenger transport ceased due to inflation between 1923 and 1925 . In 1924 and 1925 , the railway carried waste material from the De Wendel colliery in Pelkum to today's Otto-Krafft-Platz, where a former floodplain of the Ahse, which was laid in 1913 , was filled.

In 1925 four lines were used to transport passengers. In 1926 an extension from Radbod to Bockum was put into operation. In June 1928 the tram reached Pelkum and in May 1931 Herringen was connected to the network.

During the Second World War , the railway suffered a number of damage, so that operations had to be stopped on November 29, 1944 . Line 4 to Bockum was discontinued on January 2, 1954 , because after the Lippe Bridge was blown up towards the end of the war, the railway no longer had a connection to (the?) Remaining network (e?) And had become an island operation. There was never a planned changeover to a bus operation.

Since it was not expected that the license, which ran until 1957 , would be extended, almost no investments were made in the years after 1950 . The suburban lines were gradually discontinued. On February 16, 1961 the city decided to extend the concession of the railway only for the discontinued operation. The last line was closed on April 2, 1961 . Since then, the Stadtwerke has been a pure bus company.

Bus transport

From March 1947, buses were used on the Markt – Süd route. Since the Lippe Bridge had been blown up in the last days of the war, line 4 still had to be partly used by buses.

Various bus routes were added during the reconstruction; Stadtwerke took over further lines from private hands. The following routes were involved:

  • Line 5 (Hamm train station - harbor) from February 1, 1950
  • Line 6 (Hamm-Osten - Werries-Süd) from April 1, 1950 through the transport company. This line has been leased to a private entrepreneur since 1932.
  • Line 7 (Berge - Herringen) from December 1, 1950
  • Line 9 (Hamm train station via Hövel - Bockum) from July 1, 1951, express bus line with line signal deleted (red slash)
  • Line 8 (Hamm train station - Caldenhofer Weg) from December 1, 1956

Tram line 4 to Bockum was finally closed on January 2, 1954, because after the Lippe Bridge was blown up towards the end of the war, the line no longer had a connection to the rest of the network and had become an island operation. There was never a planned changeover to trolleybus operation . The former tram line was completely converted to bus transport.

The administration did not expect the tram concession, which ran until 1957, to be extended. As a result, almost no investments were made in the rail network in the years after 1950. The suburban lines were gradually discontinued. On March 1, 1957, the concession for all tram lines expired - it was granted in 1907 for fifty years. A further approval for the tram line 3 leading to Pelkum could not be obtained. The line therefore had to be used by buses from April 1, 1957 in the Lippmann - Pelkum section. Since June 1, 1958, line 2 Hamm train station - Hamm south has been switched to buses. At the same time, lines 2 and 4 were combined to form a diameter line.

Due to the rapidly increasing car traffic in the city center and due to the narrow road conditions, but not least also due to economic considerations, the city council decided on February 16, 1961 to switch tram operation entirely to bus operation from April 1, 1961 and only the concession of the railway still to be extended for discontinued operation. At that time, most of the rail network should have been renewed; this also applied to the vehicle fleet. The investment would have been substantial. It was not easy for Hammer Bürger to shut down trams. In politics, too, heated debates were held in the Council and in the committees. Appraisers checked the economic viability of both systems and carefully examined the local conditions. Ultimately, it was the decision-making aids that led to the suspension of tram operations. Many citizens were there when the last line was closed on April 2, 1961 and the last tram from the east through the city center drove into the depot. The WDR took this last trip as an opportunity to report about it on television.

Since then, Stadtwerke Hamm has been a pure bus company with regard to local public transport. Instead of the tram cars, only buses with conductors ran on the main line 1/3. The changeover went smoothly, but it took time for the passengers to get used to the new mode of transport. In the course of the following years, further bus routes were added, depending on traffic requirements. These included line 6 from Hamm-Bahnhof to Werries-Süd, line 10 from Westtünnen to Westberger Weg, line 13 from Pelkum via Herringen to Bockum-Hövel , line 14 from Hamm-Bahnhof to Bockum / Janssenstraße, line 17 from Akazienallee to Nordherringen and line 20 from Hamm train station to Ostwennemar. Other routes were, for example, line 3 from the Ostapotheke stop to Werries and line 8 from Hamm train station to Lohauserholz.

As part of the municipal reorganization of 1975, after long, tough negotiations with the then Beckum roundabout company , Heessen was now also, at least partially, served by the transport company. Lines 21 and 22 from Hamm-Bahnhof via Hardinghauser Knapp to Heessen / Denkmal and Heessen / Neue Heimat were taken over, as were a number of rush hour and school lines. In the period that followed, these lines were changed and condensed several times.

Larger buses, the first articulated buses, were also used. The municipal reorganization also revealed the problem that the citizens of the city of Hamm had to pay different fares with the different transport companies. What was more serious, however, was that the tickets were not mutually recognized. Even before the reorganization, these difficulties had been taken into account when the transport company founded the Verkehrsgemeinschaft Hamm (VGH) in 1973 together with the then Deutsche Bundesbahn, the then Deutsche Bundespost, the Breitenbach company and the Hamm municipal utility. The aim of this community was to integrate all modes of transport serving Hamm in order to be able to offer the citizens of Hammer uniform transport services with the same fare. As a result, the companies belonging to the Westfälische Verkehrsgesellschaft Münster - Verkehrsgesellschaft Kreis Unna, Verkehrsgesellschaft Kreis Lüdinghausen, Kraftverkehr Westfalen, Ruhr-Lippe-Eisenbahn and Kreisverkehrsgesellschaft Beckum - joined the VGH in 1976. The goal of the community, which now includes all modes of transport, to harmonize the fares in Hamm, to standardize the special transport and tariff regulations and to coordinate the timetables in a meaningful way, has been implemented. From December 1978 the tariff confusion was replaced by a uniform, jointly carried area zone tariff and the lifting of the previous operating bans. It is remarkable that this merger has come about; it had led to a not inconsiderable loss of income in some companies, but the standardization could still be carried out without any subsidy from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia or the municipality of Hamm. The area collective agreement replaced the previous uniform tariff for the transport company and the partial route tariff for the other partners. It now required a new, fully electronic validation system.

According to the goals of the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia, the Hamm Transport Association is only a part of a much larger community for the Ruhr-Lippe area . In addition, transition options to the Münsterland Transport Association that already exists today and the Rhine-Ruhr Transport Association are desired. The larger Verkehrsgemeinschaft Ruhr-Lippe pursues the goal of standardizing the fares, the handling program and the timetables of the lines going beyond the city limits of Hamm to Werl , Unna , Soest , Kamen and other communities, as was the case with the Verkehrsgemeinschaft Hamm a few years ago has already happened. Stadtwerke recently signed a framework agreement aimed at establishing the Ruhr-Lippe Transport Association.

Not only the transport policy objectives could be implemented step by step. The operating technology has also been decisively improved in the past through considerable investments. Since 1971, thanks to grants from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia , it has been possible to temporarily renew the entire vehicle fleet. The improvement in driving behavior and the modernization of the interior design made the buses much more attractive for drivers and passengers. For some time now, buses have only been purchased that are equipped with Dralon velor seats instead of the previous artificial leather. In addition, only vehicles with noise-insulated engines are purchased, which ensure a reduction in the noise level inside the vehicle. Older buses are regularly replaced with new ones. However, due to the general income / cost situation of the transport company, this must be done in stages. When the transport company was founded, the income was cost-covering for a long time. This has not been the case for several years. The deficits, which show an increasing tendency, can only be reduced or kept at the same level by noticeable cuts in the transport network. The internal rationalization options have now been largely exhausted.

Despite the deficits, it was still possible for the transport company to put a completely new bus depot in Berge into operation in 1981 . The modern and rationally designed new building could only be financed with considerable support from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the federal government. It had become necessary because the transport company on Wilhelmstrasse had to be housed decentrally in the old tram depot from 1898 and, on the other hand, in a workshop section from 1956. The old systems had become too small and uneconomical and could no longer be used due to immission control regulations. The new depot, equipped with the most modern technical equipment, was also able to carry out vehicle repairs in a more cost-effective manner.

The transport company is currently struggling with massive problems. Due to the steadily increasing motorization in Hamm, which belongs to the top group of cities in terms of passenger car volume per capita, due to the falling number of schoolchildren, but also due to the relatively high number of unemployed, not inconsiderable decreases in passenger numbers have been recorded. The decrease is probably also due to the rambling route of the bus routes, which is due to the size of the city; Destinations can be reached in a much shorter time by car, especially since the route from one district to the other almost necessarily leads via the main station. The company tries to compensate for this with more attractive vehicles and cheaper line connections, but due to the general cost situation there is only little room for maneuver. During off-peak times, i.e. in the late evening hours as well as on Saturdays and Sundays, the timetable had to be reduced.

The Hamm transport company has been performing general services for decades. He also offers his services where no necessary profits, not even cost recovery, can be achieved. Originally, it was possible to compensate for this with a correspondingly high number of passengers on the main lines. As a result of the reduction in the number of passengers, however, the income no longer increases in line with the costs, despite the fare increases. This problem, which has been known for years and has also been identified by many other transport companies, needs to be limited or weakened in the future.
