Career

society

At the age of four Karabatić, son of a Serbian mother and a Croatian father from Vrsin near Trogir , left the former Yugoslavia because his father Branko Karabatić (former goalkeeper of the Yugoslav national team ) got a contract as a professional handball player in France . As a 17-year-old Karabatić played at Montpellier HB in the French first division and a year later in the French national team . With Montpellier he won the Champions League in 2003 and the French championship four times in a row from 2002 to 2005.

In 2005 he moved to THW Kiel , where Karabatić established himself as one of the most important regular players in the course of his first season, which is why the fans also voted him THW player for the 2005/06 season. In 2006 he was awarded the Kiel Sportsman of the Year award by the Kieler Nachrichten . During his four years in Kiel, Karabatić won the German championship every year and achieved the triple in 2007 (Champions League, championship and DHB Cup ). In 2007 and 2008 Karabatić was voted handball player of the year in Germany .

At the end of the 2008/09 season Karabatić left the THW Kiel. Together with his colleague Vid Kavtičnik he returned to his old club Montpellier HB for a transfer fee of 1.5 million euros . With Montpellier he won the French championship three more times (2010 to 2012) before moving to the newly promoted Pays d'Aix UC in February 2013 as part of the betting affair . Although he was able to celebrate relegation with his new team at the end of the season, he missed the national championship with his club for the first time after 11 titles in a row. In the summer of 2013 Karabatić moved to Spain for FC Barcelona . There he won the Spanish championship and the Spanish cup in the first year. In the 2014/15 season, Karabatić defended all national titles with Barcelona and also celebrated winning the Champions League. Karabatić became the fifth player to win this competition with three different clubs. He then joined the French association Paris Saint-Germain .

Between 2002 and 2020 he and his teams were only once (2013) non-national champions.

National team

Karabatić played his first international match for France on November 2, 2002 in the World Cup against Russia. With the national team, he won the European Championship in Switzerland in 2006 and was fourth at the 2007 World Cup in Germany . At the 2007 World Cup, he was also elected to the all-start team. At the Euro 2008 in Norway he won the election for most valuable player and also bronze. He won the gold medal at the 2008 Olympic Games . A year later he won the World Cup in Croatia with France . At the beginning of 2010 he was again European champion in Austria and elected to the all-star team as the center of the back. For the first time in history, the French selection was European, world and Olympic champion at the same time from 2010 to 2012. At the 2011 World Cup , he defended the title with the French team. In the summer of 2012 he won the gold medal again at the Olympic Games in London and was re-elected to the Allstar team. In 2014 he was European champion and voted most valuable player of the tournament. In 2015 he became world champion for the third time in Qatar. At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , he won the silver medal and was re-elected to the Allstar Team. In 2017 he became world champion for the fourth time in his own country and was named the most valuable player of the tournament for the fourth time after a major handball event. In the following two tournaments, the European Championship 2018 in Croatia and the World Championship 2019 in Denmark and Germany, he won the bronze medal with the French selection. Karabatić has won nine gold medals, one silver medal and five bronze medals at major handball events with France.

Suspicion of betting manipulation in 2012

Karabatić was suspected of betting manipulation that allegedly occurred during a match between his club Montpellier HB and Cesson-Rennes Métropole HB in May 2012. In addition to Karabatić, who paused this game due to an injury, and his brother Luka, other players are said to have deliberately contributed to the defeat in order to enable relatives to win large bets of up to 250,000 euros. The players concerned faced three to five years imprisonment and fines of € 75,000 for sports corruption and fraud . Karabatić himself admitted after a police interrogation in early October 2012 through his lawyer that he was involved in the betting, but not in the game manipulation itself. On October 2, criminal proceedings were initiated against him. Karabatić was subsequently released on bail and subject to conditions. Since Karabatić was not allowed to meet people involved or employees of his club, he was no longer part of the Montpellier AHB squad from October 3, 2012. Karabatić returned to the squad on October 31, after the ban on contact was lifted. On January 31, 2013 Karabatić dissolved his contract with Montpellier HB; he moved to Aix-en-Provence. The six-game ban imposed on Nikola Karabatić by the LNH league in February was overturned by an FFHB appeals court on March 29, 2013. In July 2015, he was sentenced to a fine of 10,000 euros by a court in Montpellier. During the appeal hearing on February 1, 2017, two months' probation was added.
