Smooth Criminal is a pop song from the published 1987 album Bad by Michael Jackson . The track was produced by Jackson and Quincy Jones . The piece was released on October 24, 1988 as the seventh single and reached number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 .

Song information

The song is about a woman named Annie who was robbed in her apartment. An early version was written by Michael Jackson and John Barnes in 1985 and recorded in 1986. The original title was Al Capone . However, this version did not come on the album and was revised by Jackson. The rewritten version was renamed Smooth Criminal .

Music video

The song plays a central role in Michael Jackson's film Moonwalker , along with a few other titles . The song is presented there in a ten-minute performance. Stylistically, the stage design corresponds to a club (in the Film Club 30s ) of the 1930s and takes up the aesthetics and myth of the gangster scene around Al Capone as well as film noir . The version heard in the film is different from the one on the album. The second stanza also contains an alternative text. The edited and shortened version of the video is often shown on music channels. This consists of a shortened and accelerated sequence of the music video from Moonwalker . The ten-minute Smooth Criminal clip is reminiscent of musical numbers such as The Girl Hunt Ballet , best known as the last number in the 1953 film The Band Wagon starring Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse . The video was shot in 1987 in Los Angeles . The director was Colin Chilvers .

live

The song was played live during the second part of Jackson's Bad World Tour . The performance contained a choreography that was reminiscent of that from the movie Moonwalker . Smooth Criminal was an integral part of the set list on the Dangerous World Tour in 1992 and 1993 . In the meantime Jackson had developed a way of showing the " Anti Gravity Lean " from the video on stage. Parts of the song have also been used briefly in the live performances of the song Dangerous since 1995 at the MTV Video Music Awards .
