history

Sparkasse Bochum was founded in 1838. The aim was to enable the population - at that time approx. 4,000 inhabitants - to save for times of need and for old age and to receive loans.

Business development

At the end of the first financial year, the deposits at the Sparkasse amounted to 250 thalers , one silver groschen and three pfennigs . The savings interest at that time was three and a half percent. Loans were not yet in great demand. The loan interest charged for this was between four and five percent. A good 30 years later, the savings were 1,546,000 thalers. The Sparkasse ensured the economic development of its customers and the region with financing , processing of payment flows and the provision of cash. In the course of the influx of workers through industrialization and the gradual integration of the surrounding rural communities into the Bochum urban area, the number of Bochum's residents continued to grow steadily. First in 1904 Hamme, Hofstede, Grumme and Wiemelhausen were incorporated. Weitmar, Hordel, Riemke, Bergen and Altenbochum were added in 1926. Gerthe, Werne, Langendreer, Laer, Querenburg, Stiepel, Sundern and Linden-Dahlhausen followed in 1929.

In order to enable citizens to carry out their financial transactions close to their home, the number of Sparkasse branches grew at the same time. After the Sparkasse of the city of Bochum was always located in the town hall in the early years, it opened its first branch on Kortländer in 1911 - where it is still today.

The Giro era began in 1913: the Sparkasse began checking and giro transactions together with current account transactions. In 1922 it was decided to merge the banking department of the municipal savings bank with the Amtsbank GmbH (the independent banking department of the then Amtsbank Bochum) and the independent savings banks of the incorporated districts to form Kommunalbank AG, today's Sparkasse Bochum. The First World War brought business to a standstill. After its end, savings were slowly made again. Due to inflation , however , the real value of the deposits sank immeasurably and was only stabilized again with the introduction of the Rentenmark (1923) and the Reichsmark (1924).

In 1929 the company moved into the "Iron", the modern bank building designed by the architect Wilhelm Kreis , which was partially destroyed in the Second World War . After its end, reconstruction began in Bochum. Only around 80,000 of the previously almost 300,000 living spaces in the urban area were still available; business premises in the city center were almost completely destroyed. The currency reform in 1948 with the conversion to the German mark brought about the economic miracle . At the same time, the number of inhabitants in Bochum increased, not least due to the influx of refugees, and promoted reconstruction. This involved a corresponding need for financing, which stimulated the lending business. Savings rose and more and more home loans were approved.

In order to bring the idea of savings closer to the citizens, Sparkasse Bochum introduced new forms of savings from 1951, e.g. B. collection savings, savings groups, school savings and supra-regional PS lottery savings (today savings lottery of the savings banks). At the end of the 1950s, cashless payment transactions found their way into the Sparkasse. Among other things, the associated simplification of wage payments by companies to their workers led to the fact that new branches were opened near large factories and collieries. By the end of the 1960s, the Sparkasse Bochum had 30 branches, in 1971 there were already 35. With the incorporation of Wattenscheid into Bochum in 1975, the local savings bank was also merged with the Sparkasse Bochum. The Sparkasse Bochum has had 45 branches in the Bochum city area since 1982.

main building

The building of the former Bochumer Kommunalbank was designed by the architect Wilhelm Kreis in 1925 and built between 1927 and 1929 by the architect Bernhard Wielers . It has served as the headquarters of Sparkasse Bochum since 1929. The building suffered war damage during World War II. The reconstruction between 1946 and 1949 was again headed by Bernhard Wielers. In the years 1954 to 1955, according to plans by the architect Clemens Korn, the ticket hall was added, which was redesigned in 1988 by the architecture firm SSP SchürmannSpannel . The Sparkassen-Galeria was established between 1997 and 1999, initially under the direction of Stjepan Cadez. In 1997 the architects Schröder Schulte-Ladbeck initially took over the project control and the planning of the interior design. In 1998, after Cadez left, Schröder Schulte-Ladbeck took over the overall planning and construction management until completion. The four oversized hands made of marble from Carrara were by the sculptor Michael Schwarze in 1983, another work of art in the form of a curved line was created by the artist François Morellet in 1988.
