Sven Fischer (born April 16, 1971 in Schmalkalden ) is a former German biathlete who is one of the most successful German biathletes in the recent past.
Biathlon career
Olympic games
Fischer won his first Olympic medals at his first Olympic Games (1994 in Lillehammer ). He was also successful at the following Olympic Winter Games and was a total of four times Olympic champion (including three times with German relays), in 2006 he won his first individual title at the Olympic Games in Turin with victory in the 10 km sprint.
World championships
Sven Fischer won a total of 20 medals at world championships. He won five world championship titles with German relays or teams, and at the 1999 biathlon world championships he also won two individual titles with victories in individual and mass start. In 1999 he became the first ever world champion in the newly introduced mass start discipline.
World cup
Sven Fischer won the overall World Cup twice in 1997 and 1999 . In the 2004/05 season he had to surrender the overall World Cup to Ole Einar Bjørndalen without a fight , due to an illness in the last race of the season in Khanty-Mansiysk . But he won the overall Pursuit ranking. He was also able to win the overall sprint standings four times, and was two times the overall winner of the mass start standings.
End of career
Sven Fischer announced his retirement from active biathlon on May 7, 2007 and announced that he would work as a sports advisor and co-commentator at ZDF in the field of biathlon.
On September 15, 2007 he contested his farewell race as a 2-person relay race in the Oberhof Rennsteig arena with 43 colleagues (including classmates, teammates and international friends and supervisors). At this race, he was cheered on by more than 8,000 fans with the legendary battle cry “Hopp Fisch”.
One of Sven Fischer's trademarks was his equipment. He always ran without gloves, always used an old stick system and was the only biathlete to shoot with a Suhl underloader .
After the end of his career, Sven Fischer became an "honorary member for life" in the local shooting club, having repeatedly won the local shooting festivals and thus saved his club from financial collapse.
In 2009, Fischer was a member of the Federal Assembly for the CDU Thuringia and, according to his own statements, elected Horst Köhler as Federal President.
