Thomas Donovan

Thomas Fanning Donovan (born December 17, 1869 in Charlotte , Livingston County , Illinois , † November 17, 1946 in Chicago , Illinois) was an American politician . Between 1933 and 1937 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Illinois.

Career

Thomas Donovan grew up on a farm in Livingston County and graduated from Chatsworth High School . Between 1889 and 1894 he studied at Valparaiso University in Indiana . One of his subjects was law. After his admission to the bar, he started working in this profession in Kankakee . He later moved his office to Joliet . He specialized in real estate and railway law. Before he was admitted to the bar, he also worked as a teacher. Then he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1923 he was the head of the Joliet City Fire Brigade and Police Commission. Between 1919 and 1925 he was a member of his party's state executive for Illinois. In 1929 he was also a member of the Democratic National Committee . From 1929 to 1931 he served as President of the Democrats.

In 1932 Donovan was elected Lieutenant Governor of Illinois alongside Henry Horner . He held this office between January 9, 1933 and January 4, 1937. He was Deputy Governor . In July 1940, he took part as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago , on which President Franklin D. Roosevelt was nominated for the third time as a presidential candidate. After that his track is lost.
