William Campbell (Lieutenant Governor)

William J. Campbell (born before 1880; died after 1885) was an American politician . Between 1883 and 1885 he was acting lieutenant governor of the state of Illinois .

Career

The life dates of William Campbell are not known. There is also no information in the sources about his place of birth or death. What is certain is that he lived in Chicago and was a member of the Republican Party . In 1880 and 1888 he took part as a delegate to the respective Republican National Conventions , at which James A. Garfield and later Benjamin Harrison were nominated as presidential candidates. In 1883 he was President of the Illinois Senate .

When Governor Shelby Moore Cullom moved to the US Senate in 1883 , his lieutenant governor John Marshall Hamilton succeeded him as governor under the state constitution. Also in accordance with the constitution, the President of the State Senate, William Campbell, was promoted to acting lieutenant governor. He held this office between February 6, 1883 and January 30, 1885. He was Deputy Governor .
