Verceia and Lake Mezzola

Verceia is a northern Italian municipality ( comune ) and a town on Lake Mezzola in the province of Sondrio ( Lombardy region ); Located in the lower Valchiavenna, is the last municipality of Valchiavenna for those who descend from the Splügenpass or from Villa di Chiavenna ; immediately after Verceia, where the municipality of Dubino invades the Valtellina.

geography

Verceia has 1076 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) and is a tourist destination in Valtellina . The municipality extends on the eastern side of the lake and is located on the Colico – Chiavenna railway line as well as on the road that connects the area north of Lake Como with Chiavenna . Neighboring communities are Novate Mezzola in the north and east, Dubino in the south and Sorico on the opposite side of the lake.

Natural areas

The city overlooks Lake Mezzola, which is not suitable for bathing but is still home to numerous water species and birds.

From Verceia we go to Valle dei Ratti , along which we follow paths of great naturalistic and scenic interest included in Sentiero Italia. At 950 m above sea level M. we find the Tracciolino, built to build a narrow-gauge railway for the transport of materials, that goes east to the Moledana dike, built in the 1930s, and in the opposite direction to Val Codera.

If you go up again in the Valle dei Ratti, you come to the Frasnedo Refuge (1287 m above sea level) and the Volta Refuge (2212 m above sea level), from where you can cross the Primalpia Pass (2476 m above sea level). M.) enters the Spluga valley and then to Val Masino .
