Vervio municipality in the province of Sondrio

Vervio is a municipality ( comune ) in the Italian province of Lombardy with 214 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in Valtellina . The municipality is located 8 km from Tirano at the foot of Monte Masuccio (2816 m above sea level)

geography

The municipality is located about 29.5 kilometers east-northeast of Sondrio on the Adda and borders directly on Switzerland . The neighboring communities are Brusio (CH-GR), Grosotto , Lovero , Mazzo di Valtellina , Sernio , Tirano and Tovo di Sant'Agata .

history

The village, founded around the year 1000, was a fief of the Venosta family. After the Pieve di Mazzo became dependent, the same political events followed. Although it is a small village with a purely rural nature, there are some remains of mansions belonging to the Lavizzari family.

The parish church of Sant'Ilario was built in the fourteenth century, but shows traces of later changes. However, the baroque bell tower does not obscure the original Romanesque tower, which was rebuilt and raised in the 17th century. Inside the building there is a carved and painted triptych from the 16th century. Near the cemetery is the Church of Sant'Antonio da Padova.

tourism

From the inhabited center you can go up to the district of Rogorbello (750 m above sea level), where there is a baroque church dedicated to San Sebastiano. From here you can reach the village of Le Piane, where there are mainly inhabited huts during the summer season. The driveway continues to the Maggenghi di Susen , where there is a small church from 1948 named after the Madonna delle Grazie. The folk festival (Festival of Susen) is dedicated to her, followed by the residents, which takes place on the first Sunday in August.

Continuing on a field path you reach the hut and the shelter of the Alpe Schiazzera (2050 m above sea level), which is a popular excursion destination in the summer months. The refuge belonging to the municipality is the result of the reorganization of a former Guardia di Finanza barracks in 1997. The activities of the Guardia di Finanza were very intense during the years of smuggling, as the alp offered the spalloni a relatively easy passage into it Val Poschiavo (over the Passo del Portone) and into the nearby Valle Piana, on the side of the western Val Grosina. From here you can easily pass Val Poschiavo in different ways.
