L.A. Noire is an upcoming video game developed by Team Bondi and published by Rockstar Games for the PlayStation 3 and "next generation consoles"[1]. L.A. Noire is set in "a perfectly re-created Los Angeles" of the late 1940s, with players being given an open-ended challenge to solve a series of murders. The postwar setting will include the noir necessity of corruption, as well as drugs and jazz themes. The game uses a distinctive noire colouring-style to strengthen the feeling from detective movies of the '40s.

Though little information has been disclosed so far about L.A. Noire, Rockstar has given a little impression of the game in the first trailer.[2] The "Noire" part of the name is a reference to the film noir genre, a style of black-and-white movie which was most popular from the 1940s to the 1950s.

L.A. Noire is also notable for using Lightsprint's real-time global illumination technology.[3]

Platform

In February, 2004 Brendan McNamara, Team Bondi's president, responded to an interview with Kristen Reed that "the project is wholly funded by Sony Computer Entertainment America. We have a long-term exclusive arrangement with SCEA."[4]

On September 25, 2006, an article on IGN which referenced Rockstar Games being named as the game's publisher, mentioned that "publisher representatives have made it a point to list L.A. Noire for 'next-generation consoles' and not solely the PS3"[5]. This contradicted Team Bondi's original statements from 2005, where it was announced the game would be developed "specifically for the PlayStation 3".[6]

On June 11, 2007, Take-Two Interactive, the sole publisher of Rockstar Games, re-confirmed the release of the PlayStation 3 version by listing it amongst its "announced to date" titles for "fiscal 2008" in a press release regarding the company's second quarter financial results.[7] However, during the shareholders conference-call, Take Two "spokesperson suggested that both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 releases are likely" saying that "LA Noire is being developed for next-generation systems."[1]

On September 10, 2007, as part of their Q3 2007 financial disclosure, Take Two announced the game was delayed to 2009 fiscal year.[8]
