The Newmarket 87's were the 1996 Buckland Trophy OPJHL Champions and Dudley Hewitt Cup Central Canadian Champions.

1995 was the year of the Metro Junior A Hockey League's great exodus. The Richmond Hill Riot folded, and four top end teams, Kingston Voyageurs, Bramalea Blues, Mississauga Chargers, and St. Michael's Buzzers, ran to the OPJHL citing philisophical differences with the renegade Metro league.

1998-99

The Bramalea Blues were the 1999 Buckland Trophy OPJHL Champions and won the Dudley Hewitt Cup as Central Canadian Champions.

1999 marked the Death of the Metro Junior A Hockey League. The Ontario Hockey Association, seemingly feeling charitable, allowed for all financially viable clubs to enter the OPJHL. The only team not included in the move was the Pittsburgh Jr. Penguins. The Syracuse Jr. Crunch moved to Auburn, New York for the season.

The 1998-99 season was the first season that the OPJHL ever permitted American teams.

The 2007 Buckland Trophy OPJHL Champion has yet to be determined.

The Orangeville Crushers joined the OPJHL, moving up from the Midwestern Junior B Hockey League. The Wexford Raiders became the Toronto Jr. Canadiens. The Oshawa Legionaires became the Durham Fury. The Couchiching Terriers and Toronto Thunderbirds left the OPJHL for the season.

Playoff Notes: In the first round, the Toronto Jr. Canadiens defeated the Pickering Panthers 4-3 in 6th Overtime. After 94:32 of overtime, the Canadiens won the game on an accidental own-goal. The game was subsequentally highlighted on TSN's That's Hockey where they announced that the game may be entered into the Hockey Hall of Fame as junior hockey's longest game. The Ontario Hockey Association has announced the game to be the organization's longest game [1]. The Oswego Admirals/Port Hope Predators series has been shortened due to blizzard conditions and excessive snowfall in the State of New York.
