I guess he was dealing with a lot of stuff in the pipes.

Of course everyone was striking over wages they even brought in the national guard. MY step father was sheriff at the time. Hormels should have stayed in New York and never moved to Minnesota. They flooded our state with Mexicans I mean they bring in thousands and even advertise in Texas at the border of Mexico where they say come to Austin, Mn for work. Even during the strike a Hormel was on the megaphone saying, 'WE WILL REPLACE YOU WITH MEXICANS! GO BACK TO WORK! WE WILL REPLACE YOU WITH MEXICANS!' I'm not racist but then you have to look I grew up in Austin Minnesota.

Needs Products

This article needs a breakdown of their product line. Seems too heavily focused on company history.

What is really needed!

A history is more imporant than a product line.

I would like to see a reference to Hormel during the civil war and how they were sued for supplying rancid meat the to the military. The vauge "19th Century" history is spotty at best.--Ken 19:29, 5 May 2007 (UTC)

Comment related to the posting above: I live in Austin, MN (company headquarters) and have worked for Hormel Foods for 32 years. I am reasonably versed in both company history and 'lore'. The writer above ('Ken') is obviously not! George Hormel founded the company in 1891; It is therefore IMPOSSIBLE that he or the company supplied rancid meat to the military during the US Civil War era (1861 - 1865). It should be noted that there remains, to this day, a group of highly disaffected FORMER employees of the company, who were discharged for strike-related misconduct during the infamous 'Hormel strike' (1985-1986). To these folks, this great company remains 'the devil incarnate'--hence a post like the one above...

How does one register a complaint about the objectivity of an article? As a former resident of Austin who lived through the 1985 strike (with no family connection on either side), I found the characterization of the strike rather biased. Where is the evidence that the wages were "low" at the Austin plant at the time (and compared to what) or that working conditions were dangerous (compared to industry standards, for example)? WikiProject class rating

This article was automatically assessed because at least one WikiProject had rated the article as start, and the rating on other projects was brought up to start class. BetacommandBot 22:18, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Dinty Moore's thumbprint

The cans of Dinty Moore stew used to have a large thumbprint on the top. When did that begin, and when did Hormel stop putting it on the cans? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bizzybody (talkcontribs) 18:30, 10 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

1985 strike

Is it fair to say that they were striking over low wages? Shouldn't it really say that they were striking over the fact that their wages and benefits were being cut? To word it like the workers just got fed up with the conditions doesn't really do justice to the situation. I just feel like the current wording seems biased toward the corporation and not the facts.

Hormels

My Grandfather was Emmit J. Earl their Master Plumber at that time. Some days he'd come home and he'd look like death.

I did have a Hormel contract with my IT company. My business was local on main street for about ten years, even the Sheriff that Hormel credited for saving his factory had been involved with the Company and still what happened? Later they cut our contracts for Dell. Why? They saved a few dollars an hour. Charter Comm of Austin did the same thing to my IT company when they brought in Paul Allen from Washington. Is this really about Heroin and Mexican gangs? Seems like it if you go to Austin.

Also, some say they are why the town floods too because of their developments in town, it changed the dynamics of the river.

I could go on and on about Hormels... They're liars for one.. I mean they took my dodge ram truck, hell, I could really go on for a long time. My family is one of the first families that homesteaded in Minnesota. Do you think Hormel cares? No. They're assholes they really don't give back to the town either, they just run it. If anything they abuse how the town owns it's electric company and our tax dollars for their own little programs.

The darkest Hormel rumor is there is People in the SPAM. 'The Purple People Eaters' - up I80 ALREADY. I90 runs directly to Hormels with its own truck lanes. Have you seen that movie where the brit says a pig will go through bone like butter? That's why they never find human in the SPAM. Consider the Hawaiians eat ALOT of spam, they just love it, and they used to be cannibals.

Have you read about JOHN MADDEN who defeated the PURPLE PEOPLE EATERS in Superbowl 11? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Bowl_XI He is from Austin Minnesota, where the corporate offices of HORMEL are located. John left Austin and has only returned once. Gives you an idea of how 'awesome' that town is.
