Thomas Cundy senior (1765 – 28 December 1825) was born in Restowrick, St Dennis, Cornwall. He trained as an architect in Plymouth before starting in practice in Pimlico, London. In 1821 he was appointed surveyor to the Grosvenor family's London estates and was involved in the initial stages of the development of Belgravia and Bloomsbury. He also designed a number of country houses in a picturesque Gothic style. He had three sons, Thomas junior; James (1793–1826), a mason; Joseph (1795–1875) an architect and builder.
