Howard Colvin

Sir Howard Montague Colvin (born October 15, 1919 in Sidcup , Kent , † December 28, 2007 in Oxford ) was a British architectural historian. He is known for a biographical encyclopedia of British architects and a history of architecture related to British royalty.

He studied at University College London , where he was an assistant lecturer in history from 1946 to 1948 . In 1948 he became a tutor and fellow of St. John's College, Oxford University , which he remained until his death. In 1965 he became a reader in architectural history and in 1987 he retired .

He was a member of the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England from 1963 to 1976, of the Historic Buildings Council for England from 1970 to 1984, and of the Royal Fine Art Commission from 1962 to 1972. From 1979 to 1981 he was President of the Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain. Since 1963 he was a member ( fellow ) of the British Academy .

In 1978 he was the first to receive the Wolfson History Prize for life's work. He was CBE . In 1995 he was ennobled. In 1943 he married Christina Butler and had two sons.
