The lenoks (Otherwise known as Asiatic trouts or Manchurian trouts[2]) are a genus, Brachymystax, of salmonid fishes. It contains three species living in Mongolia, Siberia, the far East of Russia, Northern China, the Sea of Japan[3] and South Korea.[4][5][6]

Appearance

Lenoks can be sharp-nosed or blunt-nosed. Populations of blunt-nosed Lenoks are generally found in different areas than populations of sharp-nosed Lenoks.[7] They typically grow to about 20 inches.[8] They are relatively round in shape, and speckled with dark brown spots.[9][10] They usually weigh up to 15 kilos.[11] Their ventrals are usually colored a reddish hue, and their pectoral fins yellowish. [12]

Lenoks in Korea are now on the verge of extinction due to deforestation.[5]

Habitat

Lenoks tend to live in rivers of any sort,[13] but usually upstream, where the water is colder.[14]

History

During the glacial epoch, Lenoks were landlocked inland of the Korean peninsula.[5]
