Ligon Middle School (North Carolina)

John W. Ligon GT Magnet Middle School is a middle school located in a neighborhood of Raleigh, North Carolina in the Wake County Public School System. The principal of the school is Scott Lyons. The school was named as a School of Excellence at the 2006 Magnet Schools of America conference.
History
Ligon was founded in 1954, right after the US Supreme Court's ruling on the landmark Brown vs. Board of Education, as an all African-American school. The school has undergone major renovations, including the building of new hallways, a baseball field and classrooms.

Courses
Mandatory Courses
Students at Ligon are required to take a Math, Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies course each year, as well as a semester of either a dance or physical education course. There are also special required courses for each grade. Students in the sixth grade are required to take Ligon Way, a course introducting students to middle school, and either Computer Skills or Keyboarding. Students in the seventh grade must take an SAT Preparation course.
Non-Standard Courses and Clubs
Ligon has many extracurricular courses. These can include standard foreign languages, e.g. Chinese, Spanish or German, or be as specific as Flash software.
Clubs/Sports Teams
Ligon has teams in volleyball, softball, football, soccer, baseball], basketball, track and field and a cheerleading squad.
Besides sports, Ligon has after-school clubs that meet regularly. They can range from the Japanese Animé to the national mathematics competition MathCounts. These usually meet once a week or more depending on the club.
Security
Fatalities
- April 9, 2007: A student was hit by a minivan while walking to get on her bus. The student died the next morning. A tree was planted as a memorial.
Lockdowns
- October 18, 2007: Code Red Lockdown, began at 7:25 AM, became Code Yellow at 10:15 AM; became Code Green at 10:43 AM; a student came on campus with a Template:BB gun, which a parent mistook for a gun. He was found in the library and taken into custody.No students or teachers were harmed.
- November 2, 2007: Code Yellow Lockdown, began at 11:07 AM, ended at 11:53 AM; police were investigating a crime scene near the school.
Explanation of Lockdown Codes
Code Red
A threat inside the building, teachers are required to lock their doors and students are supposed to hide under their desks.
Code Yellow
A threat in the nearby neighborhood, students may not transition to a class outside the building. Also, sometimes students are held in their current class to make the school more secure
Code Green
No imminent threat in the near future, students may resume school as normal.
