Mugen Spiral (夢幻スパイラル, Mugen Supairaru) is a two volume manga series written by Mizuho Kusanagi. Premiering in Hana to Yume on January 20 2004, the series focuses on the growing relationship between the mystic Yayoi, and the prince of demons Ura, who comes to steal her powers. Yayoi uses her powers to seal Ura's powers, and as he stays with her to continue to try to steal her powers and break the spell, they begin to fall in love. Tokyopop published an English language release of the series in North America.

Plot

Mugen Spiral is about the blossoming relationship between the two characters Yayoi, a mystic, and Ura, the thunder-wielding son of the sick Demon King. The story starts out with Yayoi and Ura fighting and Yayoi wins by using a magic rosary to trap him in the body of a cat. As the story goes on, she often temporarily releases him back to his demon form in order to allow him to protect her. But in order to change him into a demon permanently Yayoi has to break all 54 beads.

Characters

Yayoi - Yayoi is a powerful mystic, the last one of her clan. She is sixteen years old. Both her parents are dead and she lives alone until she traps the demon Ura into the body of a cat. She contains powers such as summoning spirits and healing. She is first annoyed with Ura, finding his constant rudeness and longing for her powers irritating. Little by little, she begins to see Ura's true nature, including why he wanted to kill her so much. Then she warms to him, ignoring his rude comments and discovering how much she enjoys his company. She feels conflicted about giving her powers to Ura; on one hand, it is her duty as a mystic to help those in need of her powers, but on the other hand, she doesn't particularly want to die.

Ura - Ura is a skilled demon prince who seeks Yayoi's powers. After he becomes useless in the body of a cat, he continues to follow Yayoi, hoping she will release him. Whenever she did release him to save her from a demon, he often spoke of Yayoi as his "prey", although he was just protecting his feelings for her. Ura pretends to be tough, but he really has a kind heart for people he cares for. Even though his brother had been consumed by evil, he desperately wanted to save him. And the truth is, he really just wanted Yayoi's powers of healing to cure his ill Father. He finds that Yayoi is one person who always seems to understand his true intentions and becomes attracted to her for it.

Hakuyo - Hakuyo is Ura's bishonen younger cousin, who is is determined to be his 'lover.' He at first appears to be very careless and selfish. While this is true to some extent, he is also a very pragmatic character who sees things as they are in reality. He is close to his cousin Ura, while he is estranged from his cousin Ouga.

Ouga - Ura's younger brother who has the ability to control darkness. As a child, he was subjected to ridicule by his father Araku, the King of the Demons. After seeing how Araku favored Ura over himself, Ouga began to cultivate his forbidden powers. He placed a curse upon Araku that slowly ate away at his body.
