Crazyracing Kartrider (Korean:크레이지레이싱 카트라이더) is a South Korean online multiplayer racing game, developed by Nexon, which earns revenues by selling virtual items in the in-game Shop, including different types of vehicle and spraypaint. Kartrider not only features fictitious fantasy vehicles but also features branded game models based on real-life cars, developed from Nexon's collaboration with companies such as BMW (Korea). There are an estimated 15,000,000 users of the Korean version of Kartrider, and over 25% of South Koreans have played the game at least once[2][3]. This was also the first game to beat Starcraft in the Korean and Chinese online game market.[4] Nexon America gives Kartrider the slogan: "Catch my drift!"

Game Versions

The Chinese version of the game is known as PopKart. A closed beta for an English version, which was shortened to KartRider (also known as Global version) was released by Nexon America on May 1, 2007 and ended on May 31, 2007[5]. The open beta was released on October 2, 2007 [6] and ends on March 18, 2008 [7]. The Chinese and English versions of the game are essentially the same as the original Korean version, with the only differences being the availability of certain items and the language used in-game. It is rumoured that KartRider is going to be released for PlayStation Portable and the Wii

Features

Players may compete as individuals (one person) or as teams (two or more). This game features cel-shaded super deformed characters (derived from an older Nexon game, Crazy Arcade) and includes representations of the following:

Types of Play

Overview

There are four game types in Kartrider to choose between: Item (Korean:아이템전), Speed (Korean:스피드전), Flag (Korean:플래그전) and Scenario (Korean:시나리오). All of them except the Scenario mode includes the option of playing it in Single Races or Team Races.

Item Game

This is a race which has floating power-ups (displayed as boxes, fairy tale books and other 3D objects according to the theme of the map) at various points in the race which the racer may collect as he/she goes through the course. Every player has 2 item slots, and may hold one power-up in each slot. These power-ups include:

  • Nitrous Boost - A red box that gives the user a short boost of speed.
  • Water Bomb - A water balloon that creates an explosion a good distance up the road. Any player that touches the explosion is trapped in a bubble for a few seconds.
  • Homing Missile - Launches a targeted rocket towards an opponent's car, throwing them into the air.
  • Wasp - A water fly that traps the opponent 1 rank ahead of you in a bubble for a short period of time.
  • Magnet - A large horseshoe magnet that drags you towards a targeted rider (not necessarily an opponent).
  • Shield - A 2 second shield that protects against a single attack.
  • Smokescreen - Competing Riders will not be able to see the track in the section where it is released. Disappears as soon as a racer passes through it.
  • Banana Peel - Drops a banana peel on the road for others to slip on.
  • Reversi Devil - Red skulls circle around all opposing drivers, temporarily reversing their steering.
  • U.F.O. - A U.F.O. descends upon the highest ranking racer, temporarily slowing them down.
  • U.F.O. Zapper - Destroys all U.F.O.s that are currently affecting your teammate(s). Found only in Team Races.
  • Suicide Timed Water Bomb - A few seconds after activation, the user explodes as if a Water Bomb had detonated right on him/her. Any nearby player becomes trapped including with the user. Found only in Team Races.
  • Angel - A shield that protects all members of the team against attack for 4 seconds. Found only in Team Races.
  • U.F.O. Mothership - Similar to the regular U.F.O., it slows down not only the highest ranking racer, but also the people within a small area of that racer. Not destroyable by the U.F.O. Zapper. Found only in the Northeu theme (L3 or higher).
  • Siren - In addition of a Nitrous Boost, any player who comes in contact with the user will spin just like slipping on a banana peel. Found only in the Pretion theme (L2 or higher).
  • Dr. R - A Reversi Devil that temporarily reverses both steering and accelerate/brake controls. Found only in Reversed Tracks.
  • Red Missile - Launches a missile to the highest ranking player. Found only in the Moonhill theme (L3 or higher).
  • Boobytrap - Drops a trap which will send the victim flying backwards. Found only in the Factory theme.
  • Golden Missile - Launches a golden missile which Balloons (a tool which protects a rider from missiles; can buy in shop) have no effect on. Found only in the Or-ette theme.
  • Rolling Water Bomb - A Water Bomb that rolls around and detonates after several seconds. Found only in Flag Games or the Pirate theme (L3 or higher).
  • Land Mine - Drops a mine on the road where the victim will be sent into the air as if bombed by a Missile. Found only in Flag Games.
  • Super Shield - An item that combines the use of a Nitrous Boost and a Shield. Found only in Flag Games.
  • Ghost - An item that hides the user from opponents for several seconds. Found only in Flag Games.
  • 5 Missile Set - This gives you 5 Missiles. Found only in Flag Games.

There are other items which can be found if a player uses special karts available from the shop or various events.

Speed Game

In this type of race there are no power-ups. Players may however earn a nitrous boost should they drift-drive enough during the race. Each player has his/her own boost gauge which can be filled by drift-driving. When the boost gauge is filled, the player earns a booster, while the gauge is emptied.

In Team Games, the each of the two teams have a team boost gauge which is filled by the drift-driving of all the team members. Unlike the private boost gauge, The team boost gauge does not give you a new booster, but upgrades every existing standard booster(red) into a longer lasting and more powerful team booster(blue). The team boost gauge fills the number of teammates multiplied by two(e.g. If you have 3 people on your team, it will fill six times as slowly) times more slowly than the private boost gauge, making it more hard to upgrade a booster than to acquire one.

Flag Game

This mode in Kartrider is a capture-the-flag style game in which the player who holds the flag for longest time wins. The other players may either collide with the flag-carrier or collect items from various places in the map (in particular missiles) which would cause the flag to be dropped from the flag-carrier if used correctly. In Flag Games, players can hold up to 10 missiles in one item slot.

In Team Games, there are two 'goal areas' for each team that players have to carry the flag to, in order to score a 'goal'. The team with the most goals wins. If the teams have the same amount of goals when the time is up, there is an extra round (Golden Goal) in which the team to score first wins.

Scenario

The Game has a scenario mode, which sets requirements that gamers must meet to fulfill the missions. The missions are there to let the player test his skill against a standard put by the game. It is also a story mode.

Types of Vehicles

Overview

Of the fictional vehicles available in Kartrider, several themes exist:

  • Solid: Loyal to its stability design, high safety factor, provides the feeling of security and solidity. Solid theme karts are heavy, and are not easily pushed out of the way by other karts.
  • Burst: Fast straight-line speed and acceleration, but weak in turning.
  • Marathon: Strong in climbing uphill, above average in straight-line speed and turning speed. Widely loved by Chinese players who do not use NX for its R4 and PRO theme.
  • Cotton: Average in most aspects, but able to drift extremely well. Widely loved by Korean players for its Cotton SR theme.
  • Saber: Fastest in straight-line speed, and is a match for the Cotton karts in speed races. Also widely loved by Korean players.
  • Plasma: The karts in this theme are divided into two categories, FT and PT. The FT karts need more drift-driving to obtain one booster, but the booster lasts longer. The PT karts only take a little drift-driving to obtain a booster, but the boosters do not last long. The new Plasma SR is a PT kart. Only available in the Korean version.

In the Korean version, numerous real-life game models of vehicles have also been available to purchase from the in-game Shop, such as the Mini Cooper SS, and Peugeot cars.

Item Specialty Karts

These special karts will upgrade specific items in Item Game. Thus, giving a user a possible edge in a race.

  • Skywalker R4: Adds "poison" to Water Bombs (which includes suicide timed bombs and rolling water bombs), which will appear green instead of blue. Players who fall victim by the "Poisonous" Water Bomb are temporarily unable to pick up any items.
  • Dragonboat R4: Turns Nitrous Boosts into Dragonboat Boosters.
  • Crazy Jalopy R4: Turns Banana Peels into Triple Land Mines.
  • Fortune Piggy R4: Turns Nitrous Boosts into Piggy Boosters. Bonus: +15% Lucci.

  • Tortoise E2: Turns Nitrous Boosts into Tortoise Boosters.
  • Panda G3: Turns Nitrous Boosts into Panda Boosters.

Licensing and Ranking System

Overview

Crazyracing Kartrider contains a complex licensing and ranking system, advancing to the top of depends vastly on both player ability and length of time the game is played. Riders start unlicensed and then advance various ranks by attaining licenses from completing training courses. The licenses obtainable include [9]:

  • Novice
  • Rookie
  • L3 (Level 3)
  • L2 (Level 2)
  • L1 (Level 1)
    • L1 Grade 1 (valid for 30 days, then must obtain Grade 2)
    • L1 Grade 2 (valid for 30 days, then must obtain Grade 3)
    • L1 Grade 3 (valid for 30 days, then must reobtain unless you obtain L1 Master)
    • L1 Master (permanent)
  • Pro (This License is still under development by Nexon)

Note that Level 1 is higher than Level 2, 3

Game Rooms

Each license stage corresponds to a separate game room which only players holding a certain license can play within. For example, if the player holds a "Rookie" License they are only able to play within the "R" room(players are able to play in the "R*" rooms if their glove ranking is equal to or lower than the yellow glove with 3 fingers). Players holding an L2 license are able to play within the "L2", "L3" or "R" rooms. However, the "J" rooms are only accessible to those who hold only a "Novice" License.

Playing in rooms which level is 2 levels lower than the player's License results in only receiving half of the Race Points(RP) and Lucci they would usually attain, and playing in a room with an even lower level results in receiving no RP nor Lucci at all. This system discourages high level players to play in lower level (e.g. Rookie) games where they are able to win more easily against less able players.

As the player attains more Licences and moves to rooms with higher levels, his/her karts get faster and he/she gets access to more tracks and items.

Glove Ranking

In order to qualify for license stage training courses, the player must reach a certain glove rank. Within Kartrider, every player has a glove icon beside their nickname, which provides other users with an idea about their ability. Every player starts with a White glove and after many cumulative games, the number of fingers on this glove decreases, denoting longer play duration and ability. Each glove starts with five fingers and reduces down to one finger, before the next colour glove is obtainable. For example, yellow glove, five fingers rank is the lowest ranking in the game, yellow glove, one finger rank is the highest rank within the yellow glove ranks and starred rainbow one finger glove is the highest rank possible in the game.

Note: The White glove changes to a Yellow glove after obtaining the Rookie Licence.

The glove ranking system goes through the following order[10]:

5 fingers 4 fingers 3 fingers 2 fingers 1 finger
Yellow glove 0 ~ 874 875 ~ 1749 1750 ~ 2624 2625 ~ 3499 3500 ~ 4899

Numbers represent Race Points (RP) required for that ranking

Advancing glove ranking specifically depends on number of Race Points (RP) earned at the end of each race. A number of RP and Lucci (Korean:루찌) are awarded to the player for their final position within a race if they qualify (i.e. finish within 10 seconds of the first player) in single player games, or in team games, every member of a winning team shares RP and Lucci whether or not an individual team member qualifies.

RP and Lucci are also gained through the use of certain driving characters, cars, or items that boost gain based on simple use or meeting a certain ranking at the checkered flag of a race. Also, additional bonuses are awarded to those playing the game in a Korean computer game/internet room (Korean:PC방).

To qualify for L3 license training a Green glove ranking is required, while L2 and L1 require Blue and Red colour glove rankings, respectively.

License Training Courses

The training courses for obtaining a license usually consist of teaching the player new skills (e.g. types of drifting in Speed Play, or how to use certain items in Item Play) and once the player has shown proficient ability in that skill by way of a test play on specially designed maps, then they can move on to the next course, and the next course, until they finish all the courses. The last course usually involves a Time Attack against a pre-determined time set by the game creators (completing a map on Speed game type within a set amount of time).

These license training courses require the player to pay a certain number of Lucci in order to compete for a skill or time attack. These lucci are obtainable from qualifying from normal multiplayer races.

After obtaining a license by finishing the Training courses, the player gets access to bonus courses (if they exist) which costs 0 lucci and gives you game tools, an upgrade, etc.

Criticisms

The game has received criticism regarding the similarity of game-play and items to Nintendo's Mario Kart series. Another criticism has been levelled at Nexon America and their extensive delay in releasing the open beta coupled with failure to communicate with their members as to progress made on the Global version of KartRider along the way.
