Rachel Virginia Gatina is a fictional character on the CW television series One Tree Hill, played by Danneel Harris.

Fictional character history

Rachel is a fragile girl who pretends to have a tough exterior. She is always looking for something more in her life, while never finding it, turning to boys (such as Nathan's uncle Cooper whom she met on the web, while lying about her age) and drugs at time. A former "fat" girl, she has had plastic surgery (nose, breast and gastric bypass) and is shown to be struggling with her self-confidence. Due to all of this she hardly has any friend, except from Brooke, whom she supported after her break up with Lucas and her on-off love interest Mouth, although they never quite made it as a couple. Rachel drives a 2002 GMC Yukon XL Denali on the show.

Season 3

Rachel Gatina is the very hot new girl at Tree Hill High School in season three. She at first has a crush on Lucas Scott (Chad Michael Murray) which begins a long rivalry between her and Brooke Davis (Sophia Bush). Although she later decides to cut it off when she realises he's only using her to get Brooke jealous. She quickly becomes a cheerleader and tries to become the head of them by sending Brooke off to a designer contest but that fails.

She then begins to get closer and closer to Mouth, but they go their own way after she reveals that she was the one responsible for the Time Capsule incident, which led to Keith's death. It is also revealed that she used to be fat but was operated upon. She also had her nose and breasts done. Mouth falls for her again, but she has a crush on Nathan Scott's (James Lafferty) uncle Cooper Lee (Michael Trucco). The two began dating, but he later breaks it up when he discovers that she is only 17. In the season three finale, Rachel and Cooper get into a car crash (caused by Rachel).

Season 4

It is revealed that she told Cooper that she was pregnant before they crashed. The two both survive, and Cooper leaves town after finding out that she was not actually pregnant. She becomes roommate with Brooke, ending their rivalry since Brooke is now at odds with Peyton. Rachel and Brooke soon become the best of friends. Rachel tries to get Nathan because he reminds her of Cooper, and even goes as far to kiss Nathan right in front of Haley right before the Ravens' first playoff game. She eventually backs off when she discovers Haley's pregnancy. She then accidentally sets Brooke up with her English teacher. Brooke and the English teacher, Nick, dated happily until he hit on Rachel. Rachel reports this to the school and Brooke later breaks up with Nick. Together they steal the answers to one of Brooke's calculus tests but as they get caught are forced to pretend being clean teens members and born again virgins.

After the stripping contest she and Mouth seem to have forgiven each other. Haley confronted Rachel and told her that she thinks she stole the test answer and she says that if she finds it is her she will turn her in. During the assignment were students get to know one another better she is paired with Bevin, smokes marijuana, asks herself if she is into girls and reveals to Bevin that she has never felt anything with a boy. She takes the blame for stealing the test by switching her and Brooke's surprise test and is expelled as a result. Rachel leaves to meet her parents but both Mouth and Brooke realize they are going to miss her. They send her a message on her cell phone with a picture of them saying "Missing you already." Rachel seems as if, after seeing the message, that she is thinking of staying in Tree Hill. She returns to crash prom, but is not allowed in. She then convinces Mouth to come with her to New Orleans, even though he will miss finals. In Honey Grove, Texas, the gang finds Mouth in a prison cell. He doesn't say too much about what happened with him and Rachel but he does suggest that she left him for some guy.

After Brooke turns herself in for the stolen calculus test, the Principal decides to have Rachel graduate. Even though she isn't present at graduation, she is mentioned as one of the graduates. Rachel actually hosts a party, and, that is where Brooke gives Rachel her diploma. She also makes peace with Mouth and, to a lesser extent, Haley. As Season 4 closes, Rachel is ready to go out in the world, even though she is unaware of her future.

Brooke hired Rachel to be one of her models at COB but she started messing up photoshoots as she is "having problems"

Season 5

It is heavily hinted that she is the friend that Brooke is forced to fire by Victoria after offering her to do a fashion show but she doesn't appear until Brooke visits an apartment she bought for COB with Owen and finds her lying face on the ground having OD'ed. Brooke then takes her to Tree Hill to not leave her alone despite Owen advising she goes to rehab. She seems to make progress but Victoria comes to break her and succeeds, making her leave with some cash she found in the house.
