UnrealIRCd is an open source IRC daemon originally based off of DALnet's DreamForge IRCd and EliteIRCd.[3][5][6][7] Since development started on UnrealIRCd, around May 1999,[3] many new features have been added, modified, some of which include advanced security features[8] and bug fixes.

According to SearchIRC's statistics, UnrealIRCd is used on the largest number of servers.[9] The largest IRC networks,[10] however, do not use it[11][12][13][14][15] because they have their own IRCd's which they maintain themselves,[citation needed] so it may not necessarily be the IRC daemon with the largest number of users.[citation needed]

History

UnrealIRCd was originally based off of EliteIRCd,[7] which was founded from DALnet's DreamForge IRCd.[16] However, since the UnrealIRCd team rewrote most, if not all, of the EliteIRCd code,[16] it is commonly referred to as a fork of DreamForge[3][6] rather than EliteIRCd. UnrealIRCd started out as the IRCd for the mp3fans.net IRC network.[16] Later it was also used on the global-irc.net IRC network.[16]

About a year later, codemastr, now a respected UnrealIRCd developer[citation needed], joined the UnrealIRCd developer team.[16]

Later, Syzop, also currently a respected developer[citation needed], joined the developer team.[16]

As of May 24, 2008, nearly a decade after development first started, in May 1999, UnrealIRCd has come from EliteIRCd, a 15-year-old's IRCd,[16] to being in use on more than 1,500 servers, more than any other IRCd.[16][9]

Future

On July 13, 2007 Stskeeps announced that the future Unreal4.0 would be a fork of InspIRCd.[1]
