This article lists the characters & terms used in the anime and manga series D.Gray-man, created by Katsura Hoshino.

Some information described below were taken by the observation of the manga and anime, others were directly taken from the character profiles that are included on the tankōbon by Katsura Hoshino.

The Black Order

The Black Order, an "army" of the Vatican and the Pope,[1] extends into every continent, having a branch Headquarters in each and the main Headquarters in Europe. Although the every part of the organization is needed to defeat the Millennium Earl, the entire Order is divided into active services and support services. The active services consist of the Generals and Exorcists, who control the divine substance Innocence. Their job includes defeating the Akuma and searching for Innocence. It is said that a secret group exists in the active services. The support services are divided into several sections, including a science, intelligence, medical, signal, security, diplomatic, and logistics section. The science section is responsible for researching the Innocence and developing them into weapons as well as designing Order uniforms. The intelligence section is made up of Finders and gathers information. The health and welfare of the Black Order staff is overseen by the medical section while the signal section is in charge of the communication that passes between the Order, Finders, and Exorcists. The security section guards all entry and exit points. The diplomatic section manages affairs with other countries and arranges for support and cooperation. The day-to-day operation of the organization, such as meals, cleaning, and accounting, are taken care of by the logistics section. Although every section is individually managed by a section chief, each branch by a branch chief, the entire organization is directed by chief officer, who is currently Komui Lee. Even the Exorcists receive daily orders from the chief, even though they are normally under one of the Generals. However, the Generals don't take orders from the chief. But they will take orders from the Grand Generals, who are even higher than the chief. The Grand Generals are rumored to have links to the Vatican. Often, the Vatican sends agents to observe the Order.[2][3]

Although the other five branches have not appeared, the main HQ and the Asian branch have been sites of many events throughout the story, from Lulu Bell's assault[4] and the level four's rampage[5] to the reactivation of Allen's Innocence.[6] Because of the attack, the Head quarters moved from the castle that it inhabited for a century to London.[7]

Exorcists

(エクソシスト, Ekusoshisuto?)

The "Apostles" of Innocence, and members of the Black Order, they fight the Earl and his minions, the Akuma and the Noah, to stop him from bringing death to the world. There are currently only 14 exorcists alive (including one who is currently in training); of the 6 dead exorcists, 3 have been murdered by Tyki Mikk. They wear their uniforms as a symbol of their authority and to provide durability for combat. Another use of their uniforms is to draw the attention of Akuma to themselves, as they cannot tell the difference between a normal human being and an Akuma wearing a human's skin (with the exception of Allen Walker) . On their uniforms, they have Rose Crosses which represent their authority, and grant them permission anywhere in the name of the Vatican (New World Alliance). All are protected by God.

Finders

Supporters of the Exorcists, and members of the Black Order. They are sent to scout out places where an Innocence may be located, and if the chances are high, they call in the exorcists. Their uniform is a light yellowish outfit with a hood. They carry a telephone on their backs. The only method Finders have of protecting themselves is the creation of a barrier using what appear to be very large flashlights. When several Finders use the lights in conjunction the barrier can stop almost any number of level 1 Akuma. The lights can also be used offensively by several finders focusing the beam on an Akuma which traps it in a barrier.

Innocence

(イノセンス, Inosensu?)

A strange material referred as the innocence cube left by an ancient civilization which, if compatible with a person, can form into the weapons Exorcists use to stop the Earl. The Earl's plan is to prevent the revival of the Innocence by searching for a special piece of Innocence called "Heart"; once he destroys it, the rest of the Innocence will also be destroyed. There are 109 units of Innocence scattered throughout the world, but only 22 Apostles of them have been found. Most Innocence have taken different forms after the Great Flood. In Allen's first mission, an Innocence served as an energy source for a doll from the city of Matel that was built to sing and dance. In the mission to the rewinding town, an Innocence takes the shape of a grandfather clock. In the mission to Arystar's castle, an Innocence took the form of a plant that bit Arystar and gave him his anti-akuma teeth. The Earl has also said to the Noahs "The Innocence will do anything to stop us for it is the devil," though this may be a way of manipulating them. As of chapter 138, it has been revealed that the Innocence that make up Lenalee's Dark Boots are undergoing something completely unheard of; they have evolved, much like an Akuma would.

Anti-Akuma weapon

Weapons made out of converted Innocence used to destroy Akumas. All exorcists are equipped with anti-Akuma weapons (due to being accommodators of the Innocence). There are three kinds of anti-Akuma weapons seen thus far: Equipment type, Parasitic type and Crystal type.

Parasitic Types

The rarest type of Innocence (though Bak himself said that he's "seen many over the years"). The Innocence actually dwells inside of the exorcist's body and transforms a part of the exorcist into a weapon. Although it may look like a part of the human body when not invoked, it is actually made up of a completely different cellular structure, as Komui put it. The spot that the Innocence resides in the wielder's body is usually marked in a way that, to a bystander, resembles a deformity. Basically, an exorcist with a parasitic Innocence becomes a weapon. An exorcist with a parasitic type is able to use their Innocence to practically full-potential and the weapons can adapt to the exorcist's emotions and "evolve" to a new weapon. This has been shown by Allen's, Krory's and (to a larger extent) Lenalee's Innocence. Parasitic types can also heal the corroding virus from the Akumas' bullets, as long as it is an internal infection. Although the weapon might transform a certain part of a person's body, the innocence can increase an accommodator's agility and overall physical strength, which is shown by Allen's increased speed when his weapon is invoked, and Krory's increased agility and speed, and possibly his jumping strength. Parasite-type exorcists require high amounts of food and nutrients to sustain themselves. More recently, it has been revealed that Parasite-type exorcists don't last very long because the Innocence they possess takes a much larger toll on their body than an equipment-type user's Innocence would. Some exorcists who are parasite-type are: Allen Walker and Arystar Krory, as well as the deceased Suman Dark and Maria. Recently, General Klaud Nine revealed that the small monkey riding on her shoulder is a unique parasite-type monster that is sentient.

Equipment Types

The most common type of Innocence. The Innocence are forged into external weapons (e.g. Katana) that are easily adapted to their Accommodators. Exorcists who have equipment type Anti-Akuma weapons tire less easily than those who fight with a parasite type weapon, but they have the additional weakness of not being able to fight if they are separated from their weapon. It is also, apparently, much more difficult to use their Innocence to its full potential. Some exorcists who use equipment-types are: Yu Kanda, Lavi, and Miranda Lotto.

Crystal Type

So far there is only one of this type of Innocence. This new kind of Innocence is and evolved form of the equipment type (something that has never happened). Lenalee's Innocence evolved during the level 4 akuma attack, after she drank her Innocence causing the blood in Lenalee's legs to bleed outside of her body and form new Dark Boots. Later the Innocence reverted into a small crystal ring on each of her legs formed of her blood, her brother explained that they are not part of the body like a parasitic type but respond to Lenalee's emotions as if it was. Since they are made by Lenalee's blood it is possible for them to quickly repair themselves as long as Lenalee has blood in her body (a fact that scared/disgusted everyone, especially her brother) making it dangerous for her to overuse them.

Togaochi, The Fallen One

(咎落ち (とがおち), ?)

The Fallen One is a condition where the synchronization ratio is below zero, meaning that Togaochi is a product of a non-Apostle forcefully using Innocence. To put it simply, Togaochi is the loss of control over one's Innocence. Once the condition settles in, the user will be sucked into the Innocence. Within about 24 hours, the body of the user will be destroyed. This is done by the Innocence by turning the subject's own life force into energy and displacing it in massive waves. In the past, the Order carried out experiments to "create" Exorcists which failed terribly, as every subject experimented turned into a Togaochi. Simply, the Innocence begins to "judge" the non-apostle as if it were God, and punishes them for attempting to synchronize without being declared worthy by the Innocence. Lenalee herself witnessed a boy, part of an exorcist bloodline, who was turned into a Togaochi when Hevlaska forcefully put an Innocence into him. This led Hevlaska to comment that experiments of this sort will not succeed: only those chosen by the Innocence can achieve synchronization. The experiment is now forbidden. However, it is unknown what would happen if an innocence was forcibly invoked in someone it was compatible with...

The formation of Togaochi need not be of a forceful synchronization by a non-Apostle with an Innocence. This could also happen with an exorcist who betrays their Innocence, as was the case of the exorcist Suman Dark, who had begged for life to a member of the Clan of Noah and betrayed the Order by giving information of the Order's current status.

Komui claims that people who are judged and become Togaochi cannot be saved. However, Allen had succeeded in saving Suman from his state of degeneration by separating Suman from his Innocence (which was helped with Suman's own will). This, however, only allowed for Suman to live physically, as Allen was too late in separating the Innocence. This, however, suggests that if a person is capable of separating Innocence from its compatible host during the state of Togaochi, the person should be able to live.

Followers of the Earl of Millennium

In addition to the millions of Akuma of varying power levels the Earl of Millennium has under his command, he also has human allies such as the 13-strong Clan of Noah. Both allies base their abilities on Dark Matter, the polar opposite of Innocence, but are also susceptible to the Innocence. [8]

Akuma

(アクマ, Akuma?, lit. "evil demon", officially used and translated as "devil")

Akuma are created through the mixture of machine, soul, and despair. When a loved one has died and the living still mourn for them, the Millennium Earl appears at their side. He asks for their cooperation to bring back the soul of their loved one and places it in a special mechanical body (魔導式ボディ) that the Earl had created. It's only once this is done that the mourners realize their terrible mistake. Once they bring back their loved ones by yelling out their name in front of the mechanical body, the Earl orders the mechanical body to 'wear' their resurrector's skin by killing them. The soul inside of the Akuma has no freedom whatsoever, and is doomed to follow the Millennium Earl's orders for all eternity unless it is freed by destruction from an exorcist. Cases of self destruction possible by direct command from the Earl or Noah members simply destroys the soul rather than freeing it whatsoever. The Akuma are really soldiers in a war for Innocence against the Exorcists. They hide in the human world by taking over a human's body. It appears that after a while, most akuma upon reaching past level 1 or so cannot remember their original human identities. Only Allen can distinguish between Akuma and humans with the power of his cursed left eye.

There are several levels of Akuma seen thus far in the series.

  • Level 0 is the Akuma right after being created. It is only the metal skeleton which is presented similarly to a model kit format when still unoccupied by a soul. The human soul is the dominant personality, but it is still bound to the Earl's control. The ends of the arms varies from Akuma to Akuma. The separate 'bones' are not connected in any way, but rather hover near where they would be connected. After a soul occupies the skeleton, a pentacle along with its host's name below it will be inscribed on the forehead of the skeletal structure. No matter how inhuman an Akuma becomes upon reaching level 2, the level 0 form remains as its skeleton.
  • Level 1 consists of a floating ball shaped creature with dozens of gun barrels protruding from it. The gun barrels are flexible and can be bent to face any desired angle without affecting its firing capabilities. The bullets made of the blood of the Akuma is deadly to the human flesh, leaving black star marks, cracking and corroding the human's body. Only those with a parasitic Innocence like Allen Walker, Arystar Krory, Suman Dark, etc. can heal the virus, (for Allen, his Innocence just cures him of the akuma poison. Krory can also suck the virus out of other humans that were hit by an akuma blood bullet), from these bullets. The souls inside a Level 1 Akuma have the bodies and clothes of their original forms. However, their faces are rather distorted and there is a chain around their necks expressing intense pain and sadness of the trapped soul. Level 1 akuma exhibit somewhat a transition from deteriorating human personality to an evil personality for level 2 later on as observed in their increasing obsession to simply kill and may, hence, show zombie like behaviour in their human form. A Level 1 Akuma will advance to a Level 2 once it has fulfilled a substantial quota of kills of humans and exorcists.
  • Level 1.5 is not an actual level per se, it is more of a mid-way point for a Level 1 Akuma. The only difference is that the Akuma becomes rounder and more spherical, with the ends of the barrels on the surface. Their facial expressions appears to show more instances of emotions closing in to a personality as of a level 2 (In the anime, a level 1.5 akuma grins like a maniac when it successfully anticipates and counters Allen Walkers attack from behind a building.) Their bullets can also penetrate barriers that normal Level 1 Akuma bullets can't.
  • Level 2 produces a dramatic change. They develop a unique ability and a sense of self. Level 2 Akuma are capable of intelligent thought and are largely independent, though they still maintain unquestionable loyalty to the Millennium Earl and the Clan of Noah. The souls of Level 2 Akuma seem to become more deteriorated. The souls inside of these Akuma can't seem to be identified at all and are in a fetal position, wrapped from head to toe in bandages. Level 2 Akuma come in all shapes and sizes (some have even appeared simply as a gas, fire, a demonic court jester, or even a playing card) and they have no common appearance. They also have different powers, such as copying a person's appearance (mirror image), emitting "ice fire" which hurts worse than normal fire, creating blades of air, emitting destructive sound waves, and creating bubbles that absorb water from everything they touch. Some Level 2 Akuma even carry modern day weaponry such as homing missiles and various types of firearms that resemble machine guns and so on, as observed in the manga. Level 2 Akuma are able to fight on the same level of a normal Exorcist, unlike their previous Level 1 form which was easy for Exorcists to destroy. After murdering enough people, it can evolve to Level 3.
  • Level 3 brings perhaps the most terrifying changes of any previous stage. Regardless of their appearance in Level 2, all level 3 Akuma become bipedal, roughly 8 to 9 feet tall, with sharp jagged teeth, and wear what looks like medieval armor that covers most of their bodies (other than a few exceptions). In addition to this, they receive a massive power boost. A Level 3 Akuma is easily capable of standing up to multiple exorcists in combat and usually has an extremely powerful ability in addition to its greatly improved strength and speed. Their abilities seem to revolve around the use of their Dark Matter, the polar opposite of Innocence. General Level Exorcists, or Exorcists with powerful Innocence are able to destroy Level 3 Akuma easily though. The first Level 3 Akuma encountered in the series was only destroyed after a fight that almost cost Lenalee her life and forced her Innocence to take drastic measures, for a shocking revelation. According to Cross's modified Akuma, there are plenty of Akuma at Level 3 or above in Japan. The souls embedded in the level 3 Akuma are near gone and is a floating dark mass with eyes. The souls want to be released from being an Akuma by saying phrases like "Please love me," or "Please destroy me,". There are different types of Level 3 Akuma, one of which is the Stable, Melee-fighter type.
  • Level 3.5 like Level 1.5 also serves more like a half-way step for the evolution of a Level 3 Akuma, except that the Akuma's form and shape no longer bears any similarity with its former Level 3 form. Instead, as the Akuma starts to approach level 4, it tears off and sheds all of its metal skin and mechanical components and begins to develop or sprout organic flesh that quickly envelops the skeleton of the former Level 3 Akuma. The mass of flesh grows in size and begins to take human form, eventually transforming into a roughly 15 feet tall, horned, nude, and human-shaped female. This form has no feet, as it stands erect like a statue on top of a pile of other Akuma and human corpses, and its belly is largely swollen giving off the impression that it is pregnant, with a number '4' in bold clearly painted on its stomach. Unlike previous Akuma forms, the Level 3.5 form remains completely motionless in a praying position, thus, it acts more like a chrysalis and shell for the evolving Akuma inside, which eventually it bursts out from the shell's womb in a contrasting act to human birth.
  • Level 4 The rarest Akuma's evolution yet (Bookman stated that in over 100 years, the order and Bookmen had never confirmed a level 4). The soul trapped inside a Level 4, according to Allen, doesn't even look like a soul anymore and is surrounded by a veil of darkness. Its form is so horrifying that it is not even shown (Allen vomited after witnessing the horrifying change, unable to look at it after his initial glance). Unlike the tall, imposing figure of a Level 3 Akuma, the first Level 4 Akuma introduced is about the size of a small child (between 4-5 feet tall), and possesses a more childlike appearance. The body is pale, and the appearance of the face is similar to that of a combined Akuma. The body has an 'organic' appearance, with a series of large and small stripes ringing its arms, legs, and neck. A large, inverted pentacle appears on its slightly bulged stomach, with a smaller pentacle on its forehead. The joints on a Level 4 are visible, similar to the joints on a wooden puppet. A Level 4 also possesses a pair of small fairy-like wings and a pair of flattened halos over its head (one small, one large), giving it an angelic appearance. The Akuma's innocent appearance is just a facade, however, as it refers to itself as a 'massacre weapon'. A small flick of its fingers is strong enough to send a General-Level Exorcist (Allen) flying what seems to be several meters, with the consecutive landing enough to knock them unconscious and put a rather large crater into the impacted wall. It can also make a scream that is able to affect the generals and other exorcists and disrupt their synchronization rates. It has shown little regard for members of its own faction, as it killed many of the newly made Skulls, all because it was "a little excited". It also seems to have the ability of spreading the akuma blood virus by contact. Lenalee and Allen were the first two exorcists to defeat a level 4 akuma and, even with their combined effort, it required the assistance of General Cross Marian to destroy the akuma completely (though General Cross seemed to be able to overpower the level 4 Akuma with little effort shown).

It has been shown that the Millennium Earl can combine a large quantity of Akuma (perhaps millions) into several dozen larger Akuma. Several were defeated, but were not quite stronger than the sum of their parts. However, considering that the eye of one of the slain of this version of akuma attacked Johnny Gill and later evolved into a level 4 akuma, it might be possible that these akuma have more abilities than originally shown.

Blood bullet

The bullets shot by the Akuma contain a poisonous virus. The moment the bullet hits someone, the virus rapidly spreads throughout their body, marking it in the form of pentacles (dark purple or black stars) Soon, they crumble to pieces. The gas from the crumbled body is poisonous. The Level 4 Akuma seems to be able to fire blasts of Dark Matter that mimic the effects of the Blood Bullet, as seen when it fired a blast while trying to kill Komui, the blast instead hit two Finders and they died the same way as one who is hit by the Blood Bullet. Many Exorcists, parasite-types specifically, have an anti blood-virus in their body and can live with it. One Exorcist, Krory can suck blood out of another to heal them.

The Noah Family

Noa no ichizoku (ノアの一族)

The Noah Family is a chosen set of humans directly descendant of Noah. A family of superhumans who cooperate with the Earl. The Noah are characterised by their grey skin tone, yellow eyes and a horizontal line of seven cross-shaped markings on their foreheads. Each of the Noahs possesses his/her own unique ability, as well as a common ability to destroy Innocence. Six of thirteen expected members have been introduced, making seven possible Noahs who have yet to appear. Skin has been rumoured to be killed by Kanda after the battle in the Noah's Ark. A fourteenth Noah was killed by the Earl for betraying them, but has never been properly revealed. In chapter 166, Cross Marian says that Mana Walker was the fourteenth's older brother, and Allen has the fourteenth's memories implanted in him.

Tease

Flesh-eating Golems that Tyki has the ability to summon at will from within his body (or the bodies of others). The Tease are purple in colour and can multiply by eating their host. The Tease (sometimes translated as "Teez") were gifts to Tyki from the Earl himself. Tyki mentions that the butterfly shape was the Earl's choice.

In the anime they appear to be black with a purple aura around them. The Tease look like butterflies and most bear the suits of western playing cards on its wings. The Tease are also capable of evolving from its original form of a black butterfly into a striped, larger butterfly with a skull on the back (An example would be when the Tease in Suman's body returned to Tyki.): the skull is capable to shooting beams of light at Tyki's command. Tyki can also convert them into X-shaped blades in combat.

Noah's Ark

The original ark that was used by Noah to save the last living humans on Earth during the great flood. Now, it is currently used by the Earl to create Akuma. The original ark became "glitchy" after the Noah who originally controlled it gave away this ability to a human (the Earl believes it may be Cross Marian). A new ark has been built and downloaded components from the original. Only the Earl and Road Kamelot were able to use it, until the fourteenth Noah gave the power to operate it to someone else. After accessing the hidden room of the Fourteenth, Allen restored the original ark to its former glory. The old ark is shown to be white, while the newer one is black.

The ark is also a device that is used by the Earl's troops to travel to a place instantaneously. Inside of it is a giant egg (identified as a plant for creating akuma), which Allen noted was "breathing". It also seems that the entirety of both arks is controlled through one (or more) piano(s) inside each respective one.

The Ark is now in possession of the Black Order, and as Komui remarked, it will be used to the full extent of its abilities after the relocation of Head quarters is complete. However, it is still considered a dangerous artifact. Cross recently revealed (offscreen, but heard from Komui) that anybody who knows the "song" Allen knows can control the ark.
