D.Gray-man is a manga series by the Japanese artist Katsura Hoshino . The manga is assigned to the Shōnen genre.

action

In an alternative world of the 19th century, the young Allen Walker becomes an exorcist. Together with other exorcists, the members of the Black Order, it is his task to stop the Millennium Count, whose goal it is to destroy the world. To this end, the count makes use of human suffering: when a loved one has died, he appears to relatives, whom he promises to bring back the deceased if they only call the dead person by name. As a result, the souls of the dead wake up again, but no longer as humans, but as Akuma, a machine weapon with a human soul trapped in it. Akuma attack and kill humans to level up. They also usually kill whoever retrieved them and slip inside their body, making them difficult to identify as Akuma. Only a chosen few can destroy the Akuma. These chosen ones can synchronize with the so-called "Innocence" and use this force as a powerful weapon in the fight against the Akuma. The exorcists of the Black Order are these chosen ones and have the power to free the souls and thus to rob the count of his servants. You have to look for the innocences scattered all over the world and repeatedly compete against the count and his helpers.

Characters

D.Gray-Man cosplayer , v. l. No. Lavi, Lenalee Lee, Yu Kanda, and Allen Walker

The Black Order

Allen Walker ( ア レ ン ・ ウ ォ ー カ ー , Aren Wōkā )

Allen is the main character of D.Gray-Man. He is fifteen years old but is one of the toughest opponents. As a young boy, Allen asked the Millennium Count to revive his adoptive father, Mana. When he was resurrected as Akuma, he put a curse on everyone, through which he can now recognize the Akuma or their captive souls with his left eye. When the Count Mana gave the order to kill Allen, the anti-Akuma weapon, the boy's left arm, activated so that he could defeat the Akuma. Before Mana's soul disappeared, he thanked everyone with the words: "I love you". While Allen believes at the beginning that Mana did this out of hatred, he later realizes that the eye should show him the torment of souls and always remind him of his task. As a result, Allen keeps his compassionate heart and always tries to save the souls of the Akuma. His weapon is of the parasite type, which means that Allen's hand is the weapon itself. Allen has an incredible appetite because of his innocence. When they first met, Hevlaska calls him the “destroyer of time” and places great hope in him. In the course of the plot, his innocence develops into the so-called Crown Clown, a white cape with a carnival-like mask. He can also transform his arm into a sword now, which looks like a counterpart to the Millennium Count's weapon and only affects Noahs and Akuma, during this first transformation he reaches the critical 100 percent synchronization, so his strength is relatively on par Marshal, which he then becomes. In addition, he is the rebirth of a Noah, also called Neah, who was Mana's brother, as revealed later in the plot.

Lenalee Lee ( リ ナ リ ー ・ リ ー , Rinarī Rī , Linali Li)

16-year-old Lenalee is an exorcist and the younger sister of department head Komui Lee. Her weapon, the "Dark Boots", allow her to move very quickly, to walk on water and, by walking on sound waves, to reach the speed of sound. She has a happy nature and builds very friendly relationships with everyone. In the manga, her innocence evolves into a crystal type.

Yu Kanda ( カ ン ダ ・ ユ ウ , Kanda Yū )

Kanda is a very strict, careful and unsocial person who always has strong differences of opinion with everyone. They disagree, especially on the question of the value of an individual's life. His weapon is "Mugen" ("Fantasy"), a katana . He also prefers to be mentioned by his last name. Kanda is a member of the second exorcist. In the manga, his innocence also develops into a crystal type.

Lavi ( ラ ビ , Rabi)

He is an exorcist and at the same time a student of Bookman (Buchmann - people who write down the stories that have not come to light and pass on to posterity). This often puts him in a quandary, as his job is actually to watch and archive history so he should stay out of fights. Nevertheless, he is also challenged in tricky situations. He uses a hammer, the size of which he can change at will, use the elements fire and thunder as an attack and influence the laws of nature. Being optimistic and easy-going, he quickly becomes friends with Allen and Lenalee. He also loves to call Kanda by his first name and annoy him with it.

Miranda Lotto ( ミ ラ ン ダ ・ ロ ッ ト ー , Miranda Rottō )

Since she was a very pessimistic, clumsy and melancholy person, she wished from her watch that the next morning would never come. Surprisingly, her wish was granted, and since then the day in the city in which she lived at the beginning has been repeating itself until Allen and Lenalee can help her. They discover that Miranda can also use the "Innocence". She joins the black order and is later said to support the task force Cross after the loss of Allen's Innocence. Miranda has the ability "Time Record" with which she can temporarily restore everything to its original state.

Aleyster Crowley ( ア レ イ ス タ ー ・ ク ロ ウ リ ー , Areisutā Kurōrī , cf. Aleister Crowley )

Believed to be a vampire by the villagers, he retired to his castle. There he came under the influence of an Akuma (Aleisters first "great" love), until Allen and Rabi took care of him. Aleister then became an exorcist when it was discovered that his teeth were his anti-Akuma weapon and his innocence resided in a carnivorous plant owned by Marshall Cross Marian which Allen took care of during his training. On his way through, he brought the plant as a gift to Aister's castle, where it bit him and injected him with the Innocence. He has only ever sucked out the villagers who were Akuma, since he can't hold back when he sees Akumas and therefore everyone thinks that he sucked people out like a vampire. If he drinks Akuma blood, his innocence is activated and he receives superhuman powers.

The marshals

The five marshals superordinate to the exorcists: Kevin Yeegar, Cross Marian, Froi Tiedoll, Sokaro Winters and Klaud Nine. As the title suggests, they are not only one of the most powerful, but also the strongest of the black order. (Your rate of synchronicity with your Innocence is over 100%). Your task is to find and train the remaining innocence and new exorcists. Most of the time the marshals spend outside the Order, mostly alone - unless they are currently training someone (ex: How Marshall Cross trained Allen) - but it is mandatory to come back to headquarters at least once a month and report to reimburse. Marshal Cross Marian, however, has not reported to HQ for 4 years. In the later development of the series, Allen becomes a Marshall when he breaks the critical limit of 100% (PointBreaker). Hevlaska, who has found all innocence that their owners have not yet found in her body, immediately notices when an innocence is about to reach this critical point, while feeling incredible pain because all innocence in her body react to what is developing.

Cross Marian ( ク ロ ス ・ マ リ ア ン , Kurosu Marian )

He is one of the five Marshalls and Allen's former master. Little is known about him as he does not want to enter the base of the order and is in hiding. He is the only living person who can transform Akuma, so can take away their will to destroy. His anti-Akuma weapons are the coffin of Marieanne (Mother of God) and a pistol called Judgment. Cross has a preference for women and always tries to wrap her around his finger. He has also been the master of all and taught him about the Akuma. When Allen was ready, he sent him to the headquarters of the Black Order. He didn't want to come with us, however, so he knocked everyone out when he asked why he should go alone.

  • Klaud (Cloud) Nine

She is the only woman among the marshals. Her Innocence is a little white monkey named LauChimin who, in its normal state, always sits on her shoulder. Furthermore, she has a whip with which she gives orders to LauChimin. Rumor has it that this is also an innocence, as with Cross Marian.

  • Sokaro Winters

He is one of the five marshals. Little is known about him because like the other marshals he is never in one place for long and is looking for compatible users (people who can use the Innocence) for the Innocence. He was a death row murderer, but was pardoned when he agreed to work as an exorcist for the Black Order. His anti-Akuma weapon is called Madness and is shaped like a double-edged sword. Sokaro is very combative and almost always wears a mask.

Crow

The organization called "Crow" is a kind of bodyguard for the most important people of the Black Order. They consist of third exorcists, another experiment by the Order to create exorcists instead of looking for the compatible. These exorcists are half-Akuma, they have Akumagens in them, so they react negatively to Innocence. Her weapon is a modified arm that sucks the Akuma in like a black hole. The members Madarao, Tewak, Goushi, Kiredori and Tokusa are known.

The heart

The heart is known as the innocence that controls all others. The Millennium Count is especially looking for her because with the destruction of the heart he would also cause the destruction of every other innocence and there would be no more exorcists. On the other hand, you can use it to change any other innocence.

Akuma

Akuma is the name given to the beings that the Millennium Count creates and controls. They are used to fight exorcists and to destroy the world.

Formation of an Akuma:

  1. A grieving person must be given (ex: a boy loses his father).
  2. When that person is alone in one place (mostly a cemetery), the Millennium Count appears.
  3. He says he can raise the dead again and then conjures up the "raw" body of an Akuma, which looks like an endoskeleton .
  4. If the person agrees to bring the deceased back, the person has to call out the name of the deceased with the innermost strength of their soul and stand in front of the armor or the "raw" Akuma that the Millennium Count had conjured up .
  5. Through the connection of the two souls (living, deceased), the soul of the deceased person is locked in the Akuma armor and has to obey the will of the Millennium Count against their will - so one could say that Akuma are a kind of undead.
  6. Eventually, the Millennium Count will order the Akuma to kill the person who called the deceased person's name and wear it like a dress so that no other person would notice that something had happened.

The Akuma energies are the sadness and suffering of the souls enclosed within them. The more people an Akuma kills, the more the soul suffers. As a result, the Akuma develop from level 1 to level 4.

The Noah family

All members of the Noah family feel hatred for most people, they have the power to command Akuma.

Millennium Count (Adam) : He is the head of the Noahs. He is also called the "Creator" because he is able to create Akuma. But that forms only part of his power, because he has many mystical powers and a great goal, so he says "I will bury this world!" He only shows emotions in a couple of episodes such as B. Hatred as the ark is destroyed.

Road Kamelot (Rhode Camelot) : Road (Rhode) is the oldest of the Noahs, although she looks like a child and also has 'childish preferences', e.g. B. Doing homework, playing games, etc. She can create her own space (Noah's dream) by bringing back the worst memories of her victims and revisiting them. Although she looks like a little girl, she is the oldest of Noah's children and also holds the position of "player". This means that she can control and reprogram the ark at will. Road develops a deep affection and interest in everyone. She sees him as her property and claims to love him, but you don't know whether it is really love, because she doesn't shy away from hurting everyone physically and mentally. And although she mostly doesn't care about anything, she puts her family, the Noah, above everything else. She embodies the Noah of dreams.

Tiky Mikk (Ticky Mick) (Joyd) : Tiky is the second oldest Noah. He is used by the Millennium Count as a hit man. His ability to ignore and manipulate matter, as well as his man-eating golems ("tease"), which look like butterflies, make him a dangerous opponent. He loves his life in the Noah clan, but also that among the people. The Millennium Count always gives him the nickname “pet” because he has not yet discovered his right powers. He embodies the pleasure or enjoyment of Noah.

Skin Bolic (Wrathra) : He's a typical enemy: gullible, but enormously strong. He can transform into a yellow monster that uses the abilities of Noah's revenge in the form of lightning bolts. He only likes sweet things and goes crazy every time he is served something that isn't sweet. Skin embodies the wrath of Noah. He dies in the first anime part.

Jasdevi (Jasdero & Devito) : These two Noah are actually the same person, namely Jasdevi, and have the gift of making things that they imagine real. You just have to imagine things at the same time and they will appear. They also prefer to use their pistols to shoot cartridges that they have designed themselves, which are then used for fire, ice or other projectiles. To unite, they shoot each other, after which they become a person who is even stronger than the two individually. They embody the bonds of Noah.

Lulubell (Lustol) : She is a color Noah. That is, it is able to transform into many different forms. (e.g. as a cat, lenalee, water, etc.) She is usually very emotionless and an excellent tactician. She carries out all of her assignments with the greatest precision. She embodies the lust of Noah.
