Hagerty High School is a public secondary school in Oviedo, Florida, United States. The school is part of Seminole County Public Schools. Hagerty High School is the academic and athletic rival school of Oviedo High School.
History
Paul J. Hagerty High School opened in 2005. Every year up until the 2008-2009 school year, a new grade was added. As of the 2008-2009 school year, the first senior class was added. The Seminole County School Board named the school for its school superintendent Dr. Paul J. Hagerty who retired in 2003 having served as superintendent since 1992.
Before the school became a high school, it was Lawton Chiles Middle School for several years while construction on several buildings continued. Principal Sam Momary oversaw all construction. During the 05-06 year, Hagerty was born and new lines were drawn for the county. Many middle school students were switched to Jackson Heights Middle School or the newly constructed Lawton Chiles Middle School.[citation needed]
Extracurricular activities
Hagerty High School has athletic programs in lacrosse, volleyball, tennis, swimming, golf, football, cheerleading, cross country, bowling, weightlifting, track and field, basketball, water polo, soccer, softball, wrestling, baseball, and JROTC.
The Hagerty High School marching band received "Superior" ratings at the Florida Bandmasters Association District 6 marching band evaluations in 2005 and 2006, and in 2007. In addition, the Husky Band received 4th place at the "Ancient City Marching" competition and 5th place at the University High School Competition in 2007. In 2008 the Husky Band received first place and became the Grand Champions of the Durant High School Marching Competition. This was a first for the Husky Band, because not only was it the first competition they have won during the 2008-2009 Marching Season but it was also the first first-place win the Husky band has ever received. The band is also well known for its famous "Rhapsody In Blue" concert. The Band is under the direction of Mike Rice.
Hagerty has freshman, junior varsity, and varsity football teams. The varsity football team is coached by Nate Gierke, who is a member of the famous high school football Gierke family. Hagerty's district includes Lake Howell High School, Lyman High School, Mainland High school, and Pine Ridge High School. Hagerty is in the Seminole Athletic Conference.
Each year Hagerty plays crosstown rival Oviedo High School for "Oviedo's Annual Football Challenge Cup", which was established in 2008. Hagerty won the inaugural cup game with a score of 35-28. This brings the Oviedo–Hagerty rivalry to a score of 2-2 (each winning one varsity game).
The Hagerty High School newspaper, the Blue Print, gained the "All Florida" rating (with a score of 962 out of 1000) for outstanding achievements for the first two issues of the 2007–08 year.
