Tim Shaw (June 9, 1974) is a British radio DJ and presenter of The Asylum on Kerrang! Radio. At 32 years old he has 2 children from his marriage with his wife Hayley. He is ranked third in a list of the world's most controversial broadcasters of all time.[citation needed] His radio act can often feature his family and friends, sometimes even live on the phone (usually for comedic effect), but also very candid and honest interviews with guests who have included boxer Chris Eubank, astronaut Buzz Aldrin and model Jodie Marsh.

Career

Before Kerrang! Radio

He has worked on over 13 radio stations including BRMB, Century FM, Hallam FM and Magic Radio and has notoriously been fired or received a serious suspension from all of them. During his career, Tim has broken more radio rules and had more upheld complaints than any other European broadcaster.

Tim was fired from his job at Sheffield's Hallam FM after the station was fined heavily for a feature about bestiality broadcast during his late-night show.

He replaced the popular Jezza's Confessions show on BRMB when the show's host, Jeremy Kyle, moved to Virgin Radio. Tim's show, Late & Live, was not free of controversy however and broadcasting watchdogs upheld complaints of a broadcast in 2001 in which it was not mentioned that a 'live' mercy dash to prevent a caller from committing suicide was in fact pre-recorded. This incident is believed to have been part of the reason why Tim was fired after 3 days from his lunchtime job at Century FM, a sister station of BRMB.

The Asylum

Tim began working for Kerrang! Radio in 2004

Tim's greatest controversy was in 2005 when he and his ex-colleague (known to listeners as Nob Holder) broke into the house of Kerrang's past station director, Andrew Jeffries, live on air, spray-painted the word 'bellend' on the walls of the house, ransacked the kitchen and living areas and hid in the kitchen cupboards awaiting the return of Jeffries and his wife from an evening out. Jeffries returned to his house at 11:20pm believing that he had been burgled when Tim and his producer burst out of the cupboards. Tim was immediately suspended 'indefinitely' and did not return to Kerrang! for month.

Tim's wife, Hayley, also sold his Lotus Esprit, worth £25,000, for 50p on Ebay after he told Jodie Marsh live on air that he would leave his wife and two children for her. Hayley placed the lot on the auction site at the 'buy it now' price of 50p with the description 'I need to get rid of this car in the next two to three hours before my husband gets home to find it gone and all his belongings in the street.'. The car sold within five minutes. The scandal made international news and Tim even made a live apology to his wife on Channel 4's Richard & Judy show. Despite this incident, the relationship was reconciled but Tim still admits that the story is one of his biggest embarrassments to date.

In 2005 Tim won two New York Radio Awards for The Asylum plus the 2005 and 2006 Entertainment Award from the station owners, EMAP.

The Asylum broadcasts between 2200 and 0100 from Sunday to Thursday on Kerrang! Radio. The current presenters are himself and Lucy Helliwell, better known to listeners as "Juicy Lucy". Other people frequently on the show include "Duncan Doughnuts", "4 Fat Blokes And A Shopping Trolly" and "Weenhole". He often also lets DogTodd have a bit on his show, near to the end of the Asylum. Tim can sometimes be heard filling in for the breakfast presenter on Kiss 100 putting him directly against his radio rival Chris Moyles.

Regular Features on The Asylum

  • Textual Intercourse

The only feature which appears daily on the Asylum, it is where Tim usually asks a certain question to the audience, and asks them to text in their replies.

  • The Blackmail Game

Where Tim calls up a local restuarant or take-away and asks for a ridiculous amount of produce for free and on the reciever of the call saying no he will start to black-mail them, eventually negotiating a few free meals.

  • The Reverse Charge Game

Where Tim calls his friends, pretending to reverse the charges.

  • Shut It, Nan

Where Tim calls his Nan, says hello and leaves his Nan on the line to see how long she speaks for. This feature was recently under threat, as the Nan found out that Tim was talking to her about her sex life on-air. However, Tim pulled off a truly magnificent lie (he denied all claims that she was put on the radio, live on the show) and the Nan lives on.

  • Bun in the Oven

Where Juicy Lucy calls a random person, and says that she has a "bun in the oven".

  • Glaze-U-Like

Where Tim (as Wilson Straddock) calls a random person in the early morning and tries to sell double-glazing. Tim claims that one call has been the No. 1 prank call for many months, and still is.

  • Ducanory

Where Duncan Doughnuts tells a story about Tim's past radio experiences.

  • The Girl Next Door

Where Juicy Lucy calls a random man and tries to invite them over to have sex.

Where Weenhole calls a random man and tries to invite them over to have homosexual sex.

  • Do Us a Favour

Where Tim gets the listeneres to text in a ridiculous sob story to try and persuade one of his friends to give him money, usually around £10,000

  • Gutter Snipes

Where Tim gets "Four Fat Blokes" to go around the West Midlands, shouting at the "scrubbers who let our community down". He often gets a angry response, and is left to run away.

  • The Asylum Sound

Where the audience have to guess what the "Asylum Sound" is. He claims that the whole world is listening to this show when this is aired. The sound is actually Tim on the toilet.

  • The 10 Million Pound Game

Where Tim or one of his co-hosts call a random person and says that they have won £10 million. He claims that if they say yes, he will give the money to them.

  • Turrett FM

Where Tim (as Wilson Straddock) pretends to be a totally different radio station and listeners have the choice of what mood Tim should be. He then talks to a member of a certain proffession on air, and annoys him/her until s/he hangs up.

  • Pop Round for a Poo

Where Tim gets Juicy Lucy to ring people up and ask to use their toilet.

  • Love thy Neighbour

Where Tim tells a story about people who have problems and calls them and claims something bad is happening to their car or other possesion and then explains how that fixed their problem and changed their life.

  • The Old Boot Game

Where Tim rings a random number and the old boot, (an old lady) attempts an intelligible conversation with the person on the other line, using simple prerecorded phrases, including "yes", "no", "you're a spoon" "she sounds like a man" and "I don't know".

  • The Little Boot Game

Where Tim rings a random number and the little boot, (a very young girl) attempts an intelligible conversation with the person on the other line, using simple prerecorded phrases, including "yes", "no", "why do people hate me" "people called me an idiot at school today" and "I don't know". After some time she will always say "do you want to hear something special?", followed by a ripping sound and a deep, scarry voice saying various phrases such as "I'm outside" and "I'm just a little girl".

Non-Radio Projects

Tim has recently completed TV work for the second series of Channel 4's "Balls Of Steel" which is to be shown in Autumn 2006.
