Pre Civil War and immediately thereafter

The original Alabama and Florida Railroad was chartered in 1836, but fell victim to an economic downturn the following year. Re-entering business in 1850, it acquired 400,000 acres of Federal and state land between Montgomery, Alabama and Pensacola, Florida in 1856 for construction of a single-track line between those two towns that was completed to the Alabama line in 1861, then on to Pensacola by 1869.[3] After the Civil War a government loan was obtained to purchase new rolling stock; this line merged with the Mobile & Great Northern Railway Company to form the Mobile and Montgomery Railroad. The rail line was extended from Pensacola to Mobile, Alabama in 1872, and in 1880 the company was sold to the Louisville and Nashville Railroad.[4]

The A&F reborn

A new Alabama and Florida Railroad commenced construction in 1901 of a line stretching 109 miles (175 km) from Georgiana, Alabama to Graceville, Florida. It was operated by the Louisville & Nashville between 1901–1982 and Seaboard System from 1983-1986. The section between Geneva, Alabama and Graceville, Florida was abandoned January 16, 1984.[5]

Gulf & Ohio

Initially the line between Georgiana and Geneva was purchased and operated by Gulf & Ohio Railways as the Alabama & Florida Railroad beginning July 28, 1986.[6] The purchase included 7.8 miles (12.6 km) of the Andalusia and Conecuh Railroad from Andalusia, Alabama to Gantt, Alabama, as well as a branch from Crestview, Florida to Florala, Alabama operated as the Yellow River Railroad. Operations on the Yellow River Railroad ended in December 1987.[7]

Pioneer Railcorp

The railroad to include 86 miles (138 km) of trackage was purchased by its current owner, Pioneer Railcorp, on November 23, 1992. Both the reporting marks and name of the railroad were modified with the change in ownership; reporting marks changed from AFLR to AF and the name changed to Alabama and Florida Railway. 36 miles (58 km) of trackage from Georgiana, Alabama to Andalusia, Alabama was sold back to the Gulf & Ohio and named Three Notch Railroad on June 11, 2001.[8] The AF connects with Three Notch Railroad at Andalusia, Alabama.
