Ashton, Stalybridge & Liverpool Junction Railway (AS&LJR}, was formed in 1844 and was taken over by the Manchester & Leeds Railway in 1847.

The first section ren from Miles Platting on the L&YR to Ashton under Lyne it opened 13 July 1846 on 5 October 1846 the line connected to the [L&YR] at Stalybridge. Finnaly on [1 August]] 1849 it was connected to L&NWR at Stalybridge
