MTV Africa Music Awards

The MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMA) were established in 2008 by MTV Networks Africa to celebrate the most popular music in Africa. Originally African artists were awarded an MTV Europe Music Award voted by MTV Base Africa viewers for Best African artist in the 2006 and 2007 MTV Europe Music Awards. The first awards show will take place in Nigeria on November 22nd in conjunction with Zain and local television channels in Africa. The two hour television spectuacular, combining performances from top African and international stars with award presentations and international hosts. The award show will focus on music from a variety of genres includig Hip-Hop, R&B, Rock, Afro pop, Afro beat, Kwaito, Bongo flava, Dancehall and Soul. The MTV Africa Music Awards with Zain will be preceded by four concerts celebrating the musicians nominated for the awards. The concerts featuring international and local nominees, will take place in Johanesburg, November 5th, Nairobi, November 9th, the Democratic Republic of Congo November 13th and Lagos on November 15th, 2008.
