Luxorius

Luxorius is an Ancient Roman poet and writer of epigrams who lived in Carthage, Africa during the last years of the Vandal occupation in the 6th century, under the reign of the Vandal Kings Thrasamund, Hilderic, and Gelimer (AD 496-534). He greatly admired the notable Roman author Martial, whom he used as a model when composing his works. His writings served as a bridge between the end of the Classical Period and the beginning of Medieval Latinand are compiled in a book called A Latin Poet Among the Vandals translated by Morris Rosenblum.

Navies
Some countries don't have navies. what of those? redirect ot Military?
Also some countries will be protectorates and as such will not have Navies and will have the navies of the parent country associated with it. ChiragPatnaik (talk) 03:02, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
:PI have finished the clear cases of A. I recommend that u see A (and the preceding list) on my Talk page, they pretty much enompass all the exceptions. ChiragPatnaik (talk) 03:13, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

: Leave the ones that don't have navies red, and make a little note on your list next to it: "(None)". We can use that to track these later. When the country lists are moved to article space, the redirects can be created like this one: Navy of the Isle of Man.

Status report on Wikipedia:WikiProject Lists of basic topics#Basic topics lists for countries
There is only one section left (including its subsections) that needs to be completed before the pages are ready for Around the World:
* Branches of the government of x
** Executive branch of the government of x
** Legislative branch of the government of x
** Judicial branch of the government of x

There are a few more things that need to be completed before the lists can be moved into the main namespace:
* Fill in the blanks, and blank [[]]'s
** Population:
** Size:
** "(specific elections)" needs to be replaced by links to specific elections (by year, usually)
** International organization membership
** Commander-in-chief: [[]]
** Economic rank:
** Currency of x:
* Blue-linking (creating redirects for) standardized items for which the articles' names are not standardized:
** Army of x
** Navy of x
** Air Force ox x
* Fix other temporary links
** World Heritage sites in x (they all point to the same place, and need to be fixed)
** "Capital of x" needs to be replaced with the actual capital name
* Material in the lead paragraph(s) that is covered in the body of the list needs to be removed, or moved from the lead to the relevant items in the list.
* Fill in the External Links section

Moving these lists into the main namespace could have a huge impact on their development, because then each list will fall under the scope of the WikiProjects of the respective countries. That's a lot of WikiProjects that may become involved with refining and maintaining these lists.

The move will be accompanied with the placing of new sections on each of the WikiProject pages, their talk pages, placing banners on the talk pages of each list, and including links to these lists in hatnotes on the relevant articles and portals, and placing section links in the see also sections of relevant articles (Geography of x, Military of x, etc.). Lots of AWB work.

The article was very hard to edit for me because I still don't have my hands on the latest quotes for newspaper and television yet (The Thomson Gale version of the Encyclopedia of India was released in 2006, and the citations date from that time).

Re: Dibo the gift dragon
The article I deleted consisted of just "dibo the gift dragon is a dragon that gives gifts to his friends" along with a few characters' names, so it really didn't give enough context to identify the subject as being a kids' TV show. I deleted that version in accordance with Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion case A1, article provides no context. If someone were to recreate the article with more context (like, at the minimum, saying it's a cartoon show that airs on various networks), I wouldn't have any objections to it. --Elkman (Elkspeak) 03:15, 23 August 2008 (UTC)

:::oops I meant Table of armies and navies. and the headers. I'm sure, you are using automation. I want to know what.
:::: Sort of. I started with a list of countries (they are all over Wikipedia), and added each country name a second time on each line. Each of the two names must start and end differently (I use punctuation outside the link brackets for this), so that you can specify the names independently in search/replaces. Then when I need a list of country links with two links on each line, I just use search/replaces - you can change the links to just about anything with the country names in them. Any of the lists created from these lists can be used in the same way. For example, the army list can be used to create a list of country links on any subject. Just use the search/replace feature in WP:WikEd (very powerful). "Army of x - " can be changed to "Theatre in x", etc. WikEd replaces Wikipedia's edit window (but only in Firefox), and has an on/off switch which makes it even more convenient.

:::: There are many forms of automation available on Wikipedia. If the above method doesn't quite fit what you are doing, let me know what you want to do exactly, and I'll let you know if I know of a way to do it faster. I'm really into speed (velocity, not the drug). :)

I would also like to ask for some help, if you are an admin that is. How can i move an article to a different title if that title already exists and redirects to the article that should be moved. the case is about the secondary schools in slovenia (specifically grammar schools Bežigrad, First in Celje, Poljane, Novo mesto) for which the arguments are: 1.the term gimnazija is specific to the slovene educational system (although similar to gimnazije in the former Yugoslavia or gymnasiums in Germany).
2.official name of the school should be used (that is also the practice for other counties)

Navy redirects
There's been a little controversy over the navy redirects for the landlocked countries (many of which have no navy), as you can see above. But it's all been worked out. Each country with no navy gets a redirect to wherever it is reported that it has no navy, or failing that, to its "military of" article.

The country lists are coming along slowing but surely. It shouldn't take too much longer before they will be complete enough to move into article space (!), but I can still use all the help I can get. (hint hint).

Little is known about the life of Luxorius. As with many poets and thinkers of his day, the only information available has been deduced from the analysis of primary texts, namely his epigrams inA Latin Poet Among the Vandals. While his birth and death dates are unknown, it is clear that Luxorius was alive and writing during the last years of the Vandal occupation of Carthage, North Africa.

Religion
Thanks!
Thanks for reverting vandalism on my userpage! <font color="990000">D<small>ARTH</small> P<small>ANDA</small></font><small><b>talk</b></small> 14:36, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
Luxorius included writings about Pagan dieties, however, it is unclear to scholars whether he really aligned himself with these beleifs. Rosenblum beleives that he may have had valid reasoning for aligning himself more with the Pagans than the Christians at the time; "The Vandals might have been more unlikely to persecute pagans than Catholics".

Redlinks
In A Latin Poet Among the Vandals, Rosenblum precludes the translated epigrams with a somewhat detailed account of Luxorius life and time in which he lived. Rosenblum indicates that Luxorius was held in esteem by his contemporaries. In fact, in a line from one of his poems, Luxorius seems to refer to himself as clari viri, a Latin phrase denoting a title of honor under the late Emperors of Rome. Rosenblum specifies, however, that it is most likely that Luxorius did not hold a public office; the title was more honorary than deserved.

I've been looking over the army, navy, and air force link lists, and there are still a lot of redlinks, presumably for those countries which lack forces of the respective types.
Works
Well we've got to bluelink them all - when a country doesn't have a navy (landlocked countries for example), the redirect needs to lead to wherever that fact is mentioned. The same thing applies to having no army or airforce. If no mention is made anywhere that there is none, we need to add the fact to the most relevant place (such as on that country's military of article, or the military or defense section of the county's politics of or even in its main article.
Composed in Latin, Luxorius ninety-one surviving poems are the largest single element included in the Latin Anthology, presumably complied during his time. His A Latin Poet Among the Vandals has been translated into English by a few editors, most notably Morris Rosenblum in his 1961 edition. Luxorius epigrams range from 3 line poems to longer poems, extending for pages. The subject(s) of the epigrams are equally a varied; ranging from titles such as To a Noisy and Raging Dwarf and To a Fat and Unlucky Falconer to the more serious About a Stone Coffin in Which Foul Deeds Have Been Sculptured. His works, modeled after his mentor Martial, tell the reader about himself as well as the time in which he was alive.

I've started doing this with the navy links for the landlocked countries. Each country with a redlink (in the various armed forces redirect lists) need to be looked over, the status of its armed forces determined, and the necessary facts inserted wherever most appropriate and the redirects created.
While his chief task was to accurately translate the writings of Luxorius, Rosenblum also took it upon himself to include a lengthy and detailed introduction on the Vandals and Carthage, the Latin Anthology and the life of Luxorius. Following the translations, Rosenblum included 84 pages of commentary, 5 appendices, a bibliography and 16 pages of general indexes.

A bunch of my navy redirects for countries with no navies were put up for deletion, but the consensus was that if somebody were to try to look up a navy for those, they should be taken to the relevant information - that there is no navy. Otherwise they wouldn't be able to tell if there was no navy or if we simply lacked an article on it.
Criticisms
So we've got clearance to go ahead and finish these up. The same principle applies to the army and air force links for countries that have no army or air force.
While information on the life and times of Luxorius may be scarce, articles and reviews on his A Latin Poet Among the Vandals are certainly more abundant. While the focus of many of these reviews is on the actual translation and additions by Rosenblum, there are several notes about Luxorius actual writings.

While looking over the air force redlinks, I created a redir for Air Force of Western Sahara and Navy of Western Sahara, concerning which the article Polisario Front (the defacto armed forces of Western Sahara) says it only has land forces. So I added the statement right at the beginning of the relevant section that it has no navy or air force, and pointed the redirects there.
In his review of A Latin Poet Among the Vandals, Richard Bruere writes, "...Luxorius' epigrams, although ingenious in their antitheses and on occasion almost neat, are chiefly remarkable examples of the wet squib, the joke that does not quite come off"

I'll help out as much as I can, but I'm spread pretty thin - the creation of the 247 country lists is a huge undertaking. I can hardly express how instrumental your help has been in pushing these toward completion.
On a similar note, in his review of these works, Robert Palmer writes, "I ask whether the epigrams of Luxorius might not ave better remained in the obscurity of the Anthologia Latina whence they now emerge with introduction, translation, commentary and indexes"

Keep up the excellent work. It shouldn't be too much longer (by the end of the year hopefully) before the country lists are complete enough to be moved to article space, which will more than double the size of the collection of topic outlines! And this will also make the topic outlines' geography coverage more extensive than that of portals.

Navies

Some countries don't have navies. what of those? redirect ot Military? Also some countries will be protectorates and as such will not have Navies and will have the navies of the parent country associated with it. ChiragPatnaik (talk) 03:02, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

PI have finished the clear cases of A. I recommend that u see A (and the preceding list) on my Talk page, they pretty much enompass all the exceptions. ChiragPatnaik (talk) 03:13, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
Leave the ones that don't have navies red, and make a little note on your list next to it: "(None)". We can use that to track these later. When the country lists are moved to article space, the redirects can be created like this one: Navy of the Isle of Man.
The Transhumanist    18:59, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

There is only one section left (including its subsections) that needs to be completed before the pages are ready for Around the World:

  • Branches of the government of x
    • Executive branch of the government of x
    • Legislative branch of the government of x
    • Judicial branch of the government of x

There are a few more things that need to be completed before the lists can be moved into the main namespace:

  • Fill in the blanks, and blank [[]]'s
    • Population:
    • Size:
    • "(specific elections)" needs to be replaced by links to specific elections (by year, usually)
    • International organization membership
    • Commander-in-chief: [[]]
    • Economic rank:
    • Currency of x:
  • Blue-linking (creating redirects for) standardized items for which the articles' names are not standardized:
  • Fix other temporary links
  • Material in the lead paragraph(s) that is covered in the body of the list needs to be removed, or moved from the lead to the relevant items in the list.
  • Fill in the External Links section

Moving these lists into the main namespace could have a huge impact on their development, because then each list will fall under the scope of the WikiProjects of the respective countries. That's a lot of WikiProjects that may become involved with refining and maintaining these lists.

The move will be accompanied with the placing of new sections on each of the WikiProject pages, their talk pages, placing banners on the talk pages of each list, and including links to these lists in hatnotes on the relevant articles and portals, and placing section links in the see also sections of relevant articles (Geography of x, Military of x, etc.). Lots of AWB work.

Indian media

The Encyclopedia of India has the above mentioned reference about Raju Thomas.

The article was very hard to edit for me because I still don't have my hands on the latest quotes for newspaper and television yet (The Thomson Gale version of the Encyclopedia of India was released in 2006, and the citations date from that time).

Give me some time, my first effort was to make the article respectable and informative compared to its original state. I'll try and do more as time progresses.

Thanks and regards, JSR (talk) 18:31, 22 August 2008 (UTC)

You're dead right about the quotes in the Bollywood section. I had the entire Burra, Rani Day & Rao, Maithili (2006). "Cinema" in Encyclopedia of India (vol. 1) article but no courage to go on. I'll definitely do more tommorow. JSR (talk) 18:34, 22 August 2008 (UTC)

Armies

Good job on the navy redirects.

And since we're on the subject of armed forces, the Army of x links on the country lists need redirects too.

I've made you a list for your convenience at: User:ChiragPatnaik/Armies

Have fun.  :)

Started on this... should be done in a couple (or so) of days ChiragPatnaik (talk) 16:12, 24 August 2008 (UTC)
Cool. Next is the Air Force of x link. To change the list of Army links I set up for you to Air Force, load Firefox, then install the Wikipedia Editor (WikEd) to your monobook.js page. Then use WikEd's search replace feature on the list.
How did you generate the tale u left on my talk page? specifically the headers. I'm working ona Quick reference sheet on Census data for India and I need a quick way to do it... ChiragPatnaik (talk) 19:59, 25 August 2008 (UTC)
I don't know what you mean. What is a "tale"? And what headers are you referring to? (Please provide links). The Transhumanist    20:32, 25 August 2008 (UTC)
oops I meant Table of armies and navies. and the headers. I'm sure, you are using automation. I want to know what.
Sort of.
There are many forms of automation available on Wikipedia.

2.official name of the school should be used (that is also the practice for other counties) So they should all be moved to their official names Rokpok (talk) 17:33, 24 August 2008 (UTC)

Congratulations on your engagement. I hope you know what you are getting yourself into.  :)

By the way, be absolutely sure to watch Eddie Murphy Raw at least ten times before you set a wedding date. (Every man should do this even before he pops the question).

Good luck.

P.S.: I'm serious about the film recommendation. It's the best primer on marriage (and divorce) that I've ever come across. And Eddie Murphy gets his point across very effectively.

Redlinks

I've been looking over the army, navy, and air force link lists, and there are still a lot of redlinks, presumably for those countries which lack forces of the respective types.

I've started doing this with the navy links for the landlocked countries. Each country with a redlink (in the various armed forces redirect lists) need to be looked over, the status of its armed forces determined, and the necessary facts inserted wherever most appropriate and the redirects created.

So we've got clearance to go ahead and finish these up. The same principle applies to the army and air force links for countries that have no army or air force.
