Johann Friedrich Maximilian Joseph Freiherr von Hertling (born October 14, 1781 – died August 4, 1850) was a Bavarian Lieutenant General and Acting[1] War Minister from January 28 until June 9, 1839. He was the brother of Franz Xaver von Hertling.

Biography

Von Hertling was born in Ladenburg as son of Jakob Anton von Hertling and Maria Anna Antonia Juliana, née von Weiler.[2] Like his brother Franz Xaver he joined the Bavarian army in the last decade of the 18th century, and took part in all campaigns during 1800 and 1815. In 1817 he was advanced to Oberst, in 1831 to Major General and Brigadier. One year after acting as war minister under Ludwig I of Bavaria he became Lieutenant General and chairman of stud farming and horse recruitment (Gestüts- und Remontierungswesen). Von Hertling died in Munich.[3]
